Founded by the Class of '22. CO-OPERATION. parents, the school boards, and the public would co-operate and be as one, what a great success our schools of America would be. So come! let us work together for the good of our nation, school and ourselves. GROUP CONSCIOUSNESS. (Louise Greene.) By co-operation is meant the act of working together for the whole group. ] In the American school this is : needed especially, because to have a democratic nation there must be co- i operation of the people and it is i through the schools that democracy is taught to the people. The school not only needs the co operation of the teacher and the pu pils but also the co-operation of the parents. The success of the school depends largely upon the interest manifested by the parents in sending the pupils and in the work that they are doing. The school must have the co-opera tion of the board, which decides how long the school terms will be and what the salary of the teachers will be, and provides for the equip ment of the school. Every one has heard the saying, “If all the trees were one tree what a great tree that would be, and if all the axes were one axe what a great axe that would be.” So it is with the schools; if the teachers, pupils. (Edith Sills.) Group consciousness, or co-opera tion, is the combined action of num bers of persons. There are two kinds of co-operation: first, sim ple co-operation when several indi viduals help each other in any com mon cause; second, complex co-op eration when people help each other in different causes. The pioneer of co-operation in England and America was Robert Owen. Through h.s co-operative projects great enterprises and cor porations were established and be came famous. Co-operation has al ways been greater in England than in America. Rochdale has been call ed the “Mecca of Co-operation.” All over the world many things have been accomplished through co-opera tion. In many cases the weaker classes co-operated and defended themselves against the more power ful. Even in the Netherlands the dairy people organized societies for exploiting milk, butter, cheese, and other products. Without co-operation what can people accomplish? Nothing what ever. If every man should pull against every one else and work for his own selfish interests, what would ever be obtained? Sometimes when people are working for some enter prise in which several people are es pecially involved they fail to respond as they should. This shows that they are lacking in co-operation. When people co-operate they may be sure they will be successful, for co operation spells success. Co-operation is a real and effectual training for the intelligence, business capacity, and moral character of people. It teaches them thrift, fore sight, self-control, and the habit of harmonious combination for com mon ends. Students of Albemarle High School, let us work together. Can we accomplish anything without co operation? Let us make a record that will make old A. H. S. shine. When anything comes along to which we can respond let us enter into it whole-heartedly and determine to put it through successfully. Let us co-operate with the teachers also. They are more than willing to help us and to co-operate with us in any thing we undertake to do. In all phases of our school work, athletics, studies, societies, everything, let us co-operate with each other. A SUPERIOR ANIMAL (C. M.) Dogs I Yes, I mean dogs, the one animal that every red-blooded boy loves and the one that every man should love. And why? Why does every boy love a dog? There is a reason for it. The reason is sim ple; a dog values friendship. The dog never deserts a friend or be trays his friendship under any cir cumstances. One may whip his dog and abuse him, and yet the dog will not hesitate to lay down his life for the same master.
