Page Four THE DILLARD HI —NEWS May, 1965 A LOOK AT SPORTS Track By Michael Pulley “Our chances of winning are always good,” asserted track Coach M. W. Inman in respect to Dillard’s meeting with J. T. Barber High School on April 9. Although this is the first year that Dillard has sponsored a track team, our best prospects, according to Coach Inman, are A. C. Crowder, Jr., Charles Gun ter, Wayne Hunter, Charles Lane, and Alben Barkley. Crowder, Hunter, and Gunter appear to be the more active. Wayne and Calvin will partici pate in the sprint, field (hurdles) 880 relay and the sprint Med ley, while Charles will take over distance, field, and sprint Medley. Much enthusiasm is felt by the Dillard Tigers in that each side scored a victory over the other in basketball. In relation to field activities, Dillard will have only the shot put and the hurdles. Jerry Ray nor will also take part in sprint ing and the hurdles. Other members of the track team who will also see some action are sprinters — Wayne Hunter, A. C. (Slang) By Douglas Lawson Some Dillard students have found themselves in situations where they find it impossible to respond in acceptable common everyday English. As a result, they turn to their own “coined phrases” which are commonly classified as “slang.” Although little is known about the origin of slang, it is be lieved originally to have been the jargon of beggars and thieves. Now, any word that has not been adopted as good usage but is used expressively by numerous persons is considered slang. Slang .at its^ best sums up in a few words an expression that hits the mark, but on the other hand, a habitual use of slang encourages carelessness, inaccu racy and slothfulness. Here, slang is classified under two headings, the autocratic slang of the seniors and the comedy slang used by minors. Most slang is born of the desire to be forceful or picturesque but it usually lasts only a short time.
