We realize that the term is usually applied in a school to those people who support the rules and regulations of the institution and boost their teams during at least one athletic contest. However, we should like to suggest that a healthy school spirit manifests itself in more than these two ways. There is such a thing as loyalty to pub lications ! When you are reading your paper (at least, the jokes!), in clude the advertisements in your perusal. It may be that there will be some article advertised in which you are particularly inter ested. At any rate, you may see who patronizes your paper. Advertising in your paper is a courtesy and an expression of good will on the part of the mer chants of the city. It is only fair that in return we should patron ize them. Therefore, when you go to the city, make a point of shopping with the mex’chants who carry ads. in one of the col lege publications. Tell them that you’ve seen their ad. in a publi cation, and that you appreciate their patronizing the college. On your attitude depends the finan cial success or failure of the col lege papers. Friendliness and ap preciation on your part will pro mote an essential cooperation be tween the business firms of the city and the college. STUDENT OPINION MEREDITH, ONE BIG FAMILY Eacli year, at tlie first of Septem ber, every member of the faculty and student body, old and new, looks for ward to her arrival on the Meredith campus, when everybody can get to gether, tell of the happenings of the summer, and hear of the experiences and adventures of tlieir friends. We have all been away on our vacations, just as a member of a family leaves the old homestead for an outing in the summer. Those who were with us last year are as older sisters who have gone into other fields of work, and now we must fill their place. Those who have come to us tor the first time are as welcome as a new-' born babe Into a happy home. Tl\ey are the ones to whom the outgoing classes will shift the load, and it is their duty to accept wise counsel and grow dally in wisdom and strength. In order that they may be able to do this efficiently. Those to whom we look for advice and instruction are the ones whom we love and re spect, and who have taken the place of our earlier counselors. We have been entrusted to their care, because we know that they are wise. We love and respect them, and are always willing to do the things that they bid us do. Is it not plain to all that we are living in one big family? There are those who care for us, and there are sisters of every age, each one respect ing the others' rights, and all working together for the good of our one big family as a whole. As this new year begins, may we each resolve to make our family life on the Meredith cam pus one that will be held as a model to all those who come in contact with it. Can we not make every phase of it coordinate, not vying one with another, but all working together for the same good? ATHLETICS There are few things that can give more enjoyment and interest to school life than can clean, whole some athletics. The men’s school that has a strong football squad or bas- Icetball team supported by the entire student body is the school which needs never fear lack of popularity or decrease in number of enthusias tic admirers. It Is true that In some of the greatest universities the school spirit which Is aroused over large games often becomes a sort of open antagonism. If such be the case, It Is a sure sign of trouble somewhere in the student body, for whenever the enthusiasm over athletic skill and ability is the cause of jealousies and unfriendly rivalry, it is clear that the ideal of athletic supremacy has been carried too far, However, if the student body as a whole realizes that ‘‘all play and no work makes Jack flunk his course,” then this situation of antagonism can be remedied by an equally difllcult struggle over themes and formulas at night, The fact that the majority of Mere dith College students have not been definitely Interested in sports on their own campus has been sufficient proof to the trustees that the college need ed someone to lead in outdoor ath letics and play life In general. When selecting someone to fill this posi tion, they found a young woman whose capability and keen Interest in sportsmanship has already proven her a popular friend and leader among the students. She is working out plans which will give Meredith girls greater opportunities at play life than they have ever known be fore on their campus. •Certainly Meredith has an endow ment which cannot be surpassed in strength or quality—this body of five hundred Christian girls who have res olution and determination sufficient to put across the greatest endeavor. Our college graduates have gone out over the whole world, and they are recognized wherever they go for their splendid preparation for life. But there Is one side of our college life which we must not neglect—it Is this “play” life. When our friends all over the State made It possible for us to have a new school site located on a large tract of beautiful land, they meant for us to make use of it— just as God meant for us to make use of the strong, active bodies with which He endowed us. Then let ua not fall to express adequately our appreciation of these advantages which He before us. Dr. Brewer has given orders for the preparation of a splendid athletic field, and Miss Anderson is planning to get up a live and efficient hockey team. Hockey is the favorite sport of English girls and women, and during the last few years It has be come exceedingly popular at all of the larger girls' schools In this coun try. Meredith welcomes the oppor tunity of having a hockey team of her very own. Not only»will the field be used for hockey, but it will pro vide ample space for all sorts of track work. Miss Anderson is working with the Athletic Association to make this new side of our college life one that will mean as much to the students as any other activity on the campus, With the help of the gym equipment which we have and the splendid gym Instruction, this can be put across In a great way. To fully succeed in this play-llfe program It will be necessary to have the backing of every girl at Mere dith Colleger So when our new equip ment Is ready and the call for volun teers is sent out, we want every girl in the school to go out for some form of sport—whether it be hur dling, playing hockey, or basketball, or merely playing leap-frog or shoot ing marbles—for, you know, Mere dith girls are the kind who never grow too old to play leap-frog and want to hear bedtime stories every night. And, after all, Is not this the true spirit which we mean to create on our campus—that of Eternal Youth? One may grow wrinkled and whiteheaded, but never necessarily old, because as long as we consider ourselves young, then we are really young. Wendy told Peter Pan that she could not fly, but Peter Pan said, "Wendy, come with me and I’ll teach you to fly!” So, you girls who don’t know how to play, come with us this year and we'll teach you how.—A.
