Dear Alumnae: As you may or may not know (those who read The Twio probably know al* ready and those who do not, very likely, will never know or, for that matter, care), I am president of our Association for the year 1929-30. Be ing of a somewhat conscientious turn of mind, the job weighs on me heavily, and had it not been for our zealous sec retary I don't believe I could have un dertaken It. But because I lovo Mere dith College from the bottom of my heart and because, as 1 said, Mae Grim mer is here to do all the dirty work, I have put my shoulder to the wheel and I mean to do my utmost as Miss Grimmer'a assistant for our college this year. This letter is by way of greeting to the members of our Association. It is also a warning that you will be pelted this year, as usual, with pleas for dues and various other contributions, and, again, as usual, the officers of the As sociation are optimistic enough to hope that you will respond. (Again, Twto readers will be apt to pull out their check books and come across, while nonreaders are none the wiser.) Our energies as an Association this year will be bent toward three objec tives. We want to collect dues from a larger percentage of our membership; we want to raise a uest-egg—ostrich variety, if possible—for the library fund that will some day enable us to have a Phi Beta Kappa chapter at Meredith; aud we want to lay bands on as many as we may of the choicest high sciiool graduates of 1930 and turn their sLeps Mevedlthward. You will hear more from time to time of detailed plans for reaching these objectives that your executive board are making. Meanwhile, think about Alma Mater, talk about her, and, above all, love her. She needs many things, but nothing more than a staunchly loyal body of alumna who are willing to strain a little more, in all the straining that we are called on to do these days, that she may live and grow and bless others as she has blessed us. More anon—and please don’t say as a friend once said to me when I left her with that phrase: “The anoner, the better.” Yours sincerely, Kate Campuell Joftssox Pabham. * • « MARRIAGES Mary Martin Johnson, '21, and Mr. Owens Hand Browne, on August 8, 1929.
