We arc glad you selected Meredith for 3’our college. livery one of us is glad yovi arc here. You are to be com mended on the way in whicli you liave already become adjusted to campus life. It is with antici])a- tion that we look to you to up hold freshmen traditions and ideals. After mastering the Alma Mater (which is certainly the most difficult thing you’ll under take at IMeredith) even if your lungs are exliausted in the pro cess of mastery, vour worst wor ries are over. (\Ve .‘should say: “Cheer l'[), Good Times are Coining!”) Its a lot of enthu- sia.sin you are showing, new girls, in lining uj) with ^Meredith ac tivities. The success of the col lege does ilepcnd to a great ex tent upon how you enter into the sjtirit of campus life. We are looking to voii for great things, knowing that you will fulfill our trust in you as mcmijcrs of the A week’s time is quite enougli to make one who has never lived on the campus aware of some thing unusual in the prevalent atmosphere. Things which ap peal to the high school senior have lost their savor to us as college Freshmen. Essentials to us are drawn from an entirely new regime. The attitude among the classes is one outstanding display of the Mei’edith Spirit. All the upper classmen as well as those Sophs (whom ti’adition lias stamped as monstrous demons doomed to demolisii dumb freshmen) act to ward the new girls as one of their number. All the horrors in the Freshman mind of coming to a strange place and not knowing a soul were inmiediately discarded upon arrival on the campus. The friendliness of the girls insured comj)lcte happiness on tiie ])art of the Freshmen for the whol? year from the very first day. As a Freshman, I have al ready caught that intangible something which j^ervades the campus and is called “The Mere dith S])irit.” Intimate Gi-ijii'ses Ixto the IIeakt ok a Fkeshmax EREDITH OUSE .'crts M’ill begin in Octobcr. i'he music faculty, including Battin, Miss Armstrong, I llosel. Well, that eharactcr is gone—gone far away from this campus, which fact must incite sighs of sorrow on your pctrt but xohich gives me thrills of joy. This first issue of Tmc Twic contains articles bv four Fi’csh- nieii. Such an early and en thusiastic response to an SOS for budding journalists is gratifying to tlie staff. 'riiere shoul('f\have been sot aside u whole week before class work stuj-ted for “*(iame sessions,” which would have given ample time for the young ladies of this institution to relate to cacii other All tiirough grannnar grades and on into Pligh School I have Followed the vision of some day Ijccoming a college girl. Now, all of a sudden I find myself in the midst of “college life,” a life that Is somewhat different from home and high school life, in the fact that it opens to one a lai'ger field to develo)) both })ersonality and intellectual ability. A decision that I made with tlie guidance of my parents, of which I am very proud, is the choosing of Meredith College to l)c niv home for the next four yeaivs. I was thrilled and very sure of my future success until the dav I was to leave iiome, then all at once it seemed to me that I was going to have to meet some thing for which I wasn’t ready. \Vhen my daddy left me here at ilercdith, I felt as ,though I I had just lost my last friend but then all of the other girls botli new !vnd old were so very nice to me until I soon forgot my troubles, l^irties came, one after another foi‘ almost a week. I had no time to be home sick. Sud denly the realiication came to me that I had not I'eceived a letter from home in a xvholc vcck. I was completely heart broken. I innnediately sent tlic astonishing news home that if L did not get some mail instantly they could ex|)ect me on the first bus the following day. Of course. I was only fooling biitjthis brought results. On the following day I received three lettcli's from dif ferent members of the family, so I’m hap))y now. After all it doesn’t take much to make a Freshman happy. One consolidation to make me feel much less green came in an incident in which li Junior, one of our “big sisters,” actually made as dumb a “break” ns any freshman. She was looking for a ])lace in the dining room and asked Miss Day, who is in chargc of the French Table, if “the scats were resei’ved.” Il,‘ a Juaior can do that, tliere’s lots of iio|)o for a freshman. ■ quadrennial sodth wVlc coiivon- tioii in Atlanta last fall,'"’licre she Wixs one of the sj'cakcrs. “Christ, Necessity in ti'c Stu dents’ Social Life,” wae sub ject of her talk.
