April 13,1935 T B: E TWIG TILDEN ADVISES WOMEN AGAINST STRENUOUS PLAY “If I can convince women that they are not pbyslc^ly able to hold out tor three sets of net play la tennis, I shall feel that I' have done women’s tennis a good turn," said “Big Bill” Tilden to a group of three*hundred Meredith tennis enthusiaatg Wednesday after noon, April 3rd. The tennis king paid a visit to the college campus while in Raleigh on a tour with Vines, Lott and Btoelfon. Mr. Tilden said that this Is a day in which men and women compete on equal footing In most Qelds. However, there are deflnito physical limitations to the prowess of women in athletics, and it is not wise for them to attempt to compete with men on the same grounds. Of the many women players he has seen, Including the two out standing women players, Helen Wills and Helen Jacobs, he has never seen one who was able to stand against the terrific strain of net play. For this reason, Mr. Tilden advised women to develop strong forehand and backhand strohes, using mainly long cross-court drives. He stated that women who used this method of play were just as great, if not greater, artists in tennis as those who played a net game.
