The theme of the study course was “Indians and the Americans.” Miss Chambers spoke in chapel on Monday morning of the week, and she led “Pause for Power” at Wednesday noon. The Y.W.A. sponsored a party honoring Miss Chambers on Wednesday afternoon at 5:00. Jo Hughes led the group in play ing games which carried out the theme of the study course. In 1941-42 thirty-three per cent of the sociology students graduating from Meredith in 1929 to 1936 were single, sixty- seven per cent were married. Candidates for next year’s day student offices were Ruth Vande Kieft, unanimously elected pres ident; Ernestine Clark, vice president, in charge of secre tarial duties, also unanimously elected; Doris Harris, second vice president fulfilling duties of house chairman and treasurer, unanimously chosen; and Myra Miller Teague and Betty Jean Donley, third vice president in charge of social activities, these girls having been voted on Thursday. The Day Student Government for the coming year will have four officers comprising the coun cil, which heretofore has been a separate organization con nected to the regular Student Government by a represent ative. Salisbury Street STUDENTS GIVE SPRING RECITALS Glee Club Will Sing On Hospitality Week-end Several members of the Music Department have made plans for spring recitals. Anna Lou Toms, pianist, was presented April 3, in a gradua tion recital in the College Audi torium. Anna Lou is a pupil of Phyllis Warnick and studied with Charles LaMond before he enlisted in the Army Air Forces. The program included selections by Bach, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Liszt, Debussy, and Rubinstein. Lila LeVan Loadwick, mem ber of the piano faculty, will play a recital on Friday night, April 27, in the College Audi torium. Miss Mary Hanchette of the piano faculty presented her recital in the (College Auditorium on March 20. She is a graduate of Vassar and the University of Wisconsin and has studied with Egon Petri. Her program in cluded works of D. Scarlatti, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, and Harold Triggs. Dorothy Shealy will be pre sented in her graduation recital in the College Auditorium on Friday evening. May 11, at 8:00. Sextet Sings The Meredith College Sextet presented a program over WRAL on Sunday, April 8. The pro gram was sponsored by the Ra leigh Music Club. They also presented a program for the Lions Club on Monday, April 9. Beatrice Donley, contralto, sang the incidental solos in the NBC national broadcast of Good Friday music from the Duke University Chapel on March 30. The music was sung by the Duke University Chapel Choir, con ducted by J. Foster Barnes. Glee Club Concert Final rehearsals are touching up the program to be presented by the Meredith Glee Club on May 4. The program is to be a feature of Hospitality Week end. Vorsity Basketball Team Chosen; Softball Practices Are Begun For Future Class Tournaments Basketball season came to a close at the end of March with the sophomore team gaining first place. The run-off for championship was between the juniors, sophomores, and fresh men; but by a process of elimina tion the juniors and sophomores were left to compete for the title, and the latter was victorous with a final score of 23-20. Members of the championship team are Martha Kambis, Etta Hooper, Jetta Funderburk, Clara Jay Davis, Hilda Liles, and Ruth Martin, forwards; Imogene Granger, Joan Drake, Miriam Batten, and Jean Griffith, guards. With the close of the tourna ment there also was formed the varsity team which was selected by the class captains, manager of basketball, and Miss Doris Peterson, head of the Physical and Health Education Depart ment. Girls who were decided upon were Mildred Hoyle, Gloria Mayer, Mary Gravely, Imogene Granger, Ruth Martin, Frances Wallace, Rachel Fleming, and Mary G. Turner. Softball With the coming of Spring; also comes softball. The group that has been coming out so far has been rather small, but the report from Manager Joan Drake seems to be encouraging in that she states that the number is growing. Softball practices are held on the athletic field every Monday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons at 5:00. At the close of the season a tournament will be held between the classes. Exchange Issues Exchange issues of papers from other colleges are kept in the Publications Room in Jones Dormitory. Students wishing to glance over the issues as they are received may do so while in the room. They are placed on the shelves at the far side of the room.
