If you are one of those stu
dents who has an interest in
science, you will probably like to
know something about the Mere
dith Chemistry Department. The
head of this department is Dr.
Mary Yarbrough. Other instuct-
ors are Mrs. Helen Jo Collins and
Miss Frances Moore. This is Miss
Moore’s first year teaching at
Meredith; however, she is an
alumna of the college, for she
graduated from Meredith in
1944. For the past two years
she has worked in a chemical
plant in Charlottesville, Virginia
and has done graduate work in
the Horticulture Department at
N. C. State. Student assistants,
chosen on a basis of highest
averages in chemistry, are Jean
Griffith, Harriet Neese, Eliza
beth Hardison, and Rosa Deans.
The courses offered vary only
slightly from year to year.
These being taught this year are
general chemistry, organic
chemistry, qualitative, and
quantitative analysis, chemistry
of food and nutrition, advanced
organic chemistry, and the teach
ing of science.
There are approximately
ninety students enrolled for
courses in the chemistry depart
ment this semester, the fresh
man classes being relatively
small. This fact is due to the
small number of students in the
freshman class.

Sports Review
By BETTE LINNEY
The fall sports program was
launched last week with the
main emphasis on hockey.
Hockey practices are held every
Monday, Wednesday, and Thurs
day afternoons at five. A very
satisfying amount of enthusiasm
is being shown, but there is al
ways a position left for those
who wish to participate.
Plans are already under way
for the Hockey Tournament
which is to begin on Wednesday,
October 15, at five o’clock. Five
practices are required for eligi
bility to play in the tournament.
It is conventional to choose a
team from the Sister classes. The
Tournament is usually climaxed
by a highly competitive game be
tween the Phi and Astro
societies.
The colleges of the state are
now working on a plan whereby
a State Athletic Association may
be formed under the National
Association. Woman’s College,
Carolina, Duke, Salem, and
Meredith compose the executive
committee of the planning pro
gram. In November, Meredith
with St. Mary’s will play hostess
to twenty-six colleges of the
state. They will meet to draw
up the constitution of the as
sociation and to take part in a
play day which is to be on our
campus. Let us all look forward
to this date because it is impera
tive that we show our visitors
the courtesy and spirit which is
Meredith’s.
Freshman Frolics
The class of ’50, although now
only “green freshmen,” are be
ginning to feel their importance
in the Meredith Merry-go-round.
Much class spirit was exhibited
in the way of campaign speeches
on September 27 during the elec
tion of the following class of
ficers: Mary Lee Rankin, Rich
mond, Va., president; Kathleen
Faulconer, Silver Springs, Md.,
vice president; Winnie May Fitz
gerald, Greta, Va., secretary;
Doris Concha, Long Island,
N. Y., treasurer; and Fmily Pool,
Havana, Cuba, Student Govern
ment Representative.
Mary Lee, daughter of M. T.
Rankin executive secretary of
the Baptist Foreign Mission
Board, was born in Canton,
China, and came to the United
States when she was ten years
old. In high school she proved
her ability by holding important
offices such as senior class pres
ident and senator on the Student
Government Council. She looks
forward to annual summer trips
to Ridgecrest, but her chief
“loves” are swimming and eat
ing—most any kind of food—
especially Chinese. Mary Lee
has impressed her friends as be
ing a very sincere person who
“appreciates greatly the co
operation the Freshmen have
shown.”
The college air, or perhaps the
sun, has had a “fair affect” on
the blond tresses of a few fresh
men. For example, look at
Marilyn Whittaker, Dot Child
ress, and Phoebe Ann Arledge.
