May 23, 1947 In the World of Sports By B. J. JOHNSON The tennis tournament is in full swing at present. Already plans are being made for the semi-finals in advanced singles to be run off among Jean Griffith, Jane Middleton, Bette Linney, and “Ree” Harmon. Credit goes to Addie Elliott and Betsy Anne Morgan for winning the begin ner’s doubles. As the “score” now stands Addie Elliott and Peggy Mitchell are ready for the finals in beginner’s singles. Come on out and see the finals. They should be good. The traditional game of soft- ball between the sister classes was won by the Freshman-Jun ior team with a score of 8-3. As the softball season drew to a close, the honorable varsity were chosen. On the varsity this year are Jane Middleton, “Ree” Har mon, Ann Josey, Marty Davis, Lou Dobbins, Lela Butts, Ernelle Stanfield, Jean Griffith, and Bette Linney. The following girls have com pleted their senior life-saving course: Kathleen Faulconer, Cindy Renner, “Lefty” Pugh, Marie Wilson, Geraldine Win- free, and Jean Griffith. Say! The Senior Art Exhibition of Nancy Reach, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Resch of Charles ton, S. C., opened Saturday, May 17, and closes on Saturday, May 24. The exhibition includes sculpture, oils, watercolors, drawings, and textile designs. Nancy is studying under Mr. D. W. Reynolds and Mrs. Lloyd Ream. She has previously been a student of Mr. J. R. Rembert, Mr. Clayton Charles, and Miss Kate Erwin. The exhibition is open each day from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. A reception was held on Sat urday, May 17, at four o’clock, in her honor. At the meeting of the State Student Home Economics Club at Eastern Carolina Teachers College in Greenville on May 2 and 3, Iva Hurst, incoming president of the club, Doris Mitchiner, and Miss Jennie Hanyen were representa tives from Meredith. Doris Mitchiner was elected State vice president for next year. Also, it was only recently that Miss Han yen and Miss Brewer attended the district Home Economists meeting in Burlington. Miss j Brewer, State Counselor of the North Carolina Home Econo-! mists Association, stayed over for a meeting of the executive council. Then, to top off the year’s work as a club, last Friday night the members enjoyed a hayride and picnic at Miss i Brewer’s cabin. The Cedar Chest. STAFF DEDICATES ANNUAL TO CANADY McDowell music club EDUCATION CLUB The McDowell Music Club and the Education Club held a joint meeting Thursday night, May 15. Miriam Hill, president of the Education Club, presided. Eliza beth Stillwell, president of the Music Club, was in charge of the program. Mrs. Beavers intro duced the speaker, Mrs. Frank McCall, of Chapel Hill. Mrs. Mc Call spoke to the group on the part that public school music should play in our schools today. SOCIOLOGY CLUB The Sociology Club held its annual picnic on Tuesday, May 20. The club’s new officers enter tained the group. The long-awaited Oak Leaves for ’46-’47 is being distributed around the Meredith campus to day. In the regular chapel period this morning Jean Parker, edi tor, presented the first annual to Dr. E. F. Canady, to whom it is dedicated. Dr. Canady has been business adviser for the Oak Leaves for many years.
