Page Four THE TWIG January 16, 1948 Iv Sports o/ the By B. J. JOHNSON The soccer season ended just before the Christmas holidays with the sister classes playing against each other and a tie re sulting from each game. Honor able mention given to the soccer varsity went to “Marty” Davis, Margaret Hall, Imogene Narron, Catherine Carpenter, Lela Butts, Shirley Parker, Mary Bland Jo- sey, Peggy Patrick, “Lefty” Pugh, Betty Jean Shuler, and Ann Josey. Basketball practices began last week with the Freshman- Sophomore practices held on Monday night — and with the Freshmen showing good pros pects; the general practice was held on Tuesday night; the Jun ior-Senior practice was held on Wednesday night; and another general practice was held on Thursday night. With about thirty people out to prac tice each night, there is hope that from the general practice j participants a team will be j formed to play Salem, Woman’s College, and Saint Mary’s. After exams there will be another week of practice, and then the tournament will be held. A double Round-Robin tournament has been planned so that each team plays each other team twice; then the defeated players can’t say, “I bet we could beat that team if we could just play them again.” The remain ing games scheduled are: Jan. 19—General Practice. Jan. 20—Freshman-Sophomore. Jan. 21—Junior-Senior. Jan. 22—General Practice. Feb. 2—General Practice. Feb. 3—Freshman-Sophomore. Feb. 4—Junior-Senior. Feb. 5—General Practice. Next Week — Tournament be gins. A bowling league is to be es tablished from the teams from each of the four dormitories. The tentative time set to go down to the Man-mur Bowling Center is 3:00 p.m. on Tues days and 5:00 p.m. on Fridays. If your schedule will fit in with these times and if you are inter ested in bowling, please do not fail to sign up on the bulletin board. For those girls desiring, lessons will be given. On Wednesday, January 7, the Meredith College student body was honored by the pres ence of the Utah Centennial Quartet, which is composed of two members from Utah, one from Idaho, and the accompa nist from Arizona. The five men met in Durham about three months ago and began working on songs which could be sung throughout North Carolina. The quartet came to North Carolina to bring us the spirit of the Utah Centennial, which they are cele brating now. Their selection of music w'as chronologically ar ranged according to the growth of Utah since the time of its colo nization 100 years ago. The fact that four of the earliest pioneers to Utah were from North Carolina explains the reason for the tour of the quar tet to various points of this state.
