The plays will be given by the Freshman Class, the Phi Literary Society, and the Astro Literary Society. The Freshman Class play has been cast, and try-outs for the society plays began this week. A one-act comedy by Harriett Ford entitled Are Men Supe rior? will be given by the Fresh man Class. The play, which has a setting in a summer camp in the Adirondacks, will be direct ed by the class president, Mar jorie Joyner, and Beverly Batchelor. Daphne Yelverton will play Mrs. Amos Livingston in the production, and Donna Walston will take the part of Mrs. Livingston’s sister. Miss Susan Taylor. Micky Bowen, Betsy Ausbon, and Kathy Dean are cast as the three guests at the camp, Mrs. Bell, Miss Bai ley, and Miss Everett. Stella Matthews will play the maid, Nelly, and Emma Lee Hough will take the. part of Katrina, the German maid of all work. Martha Smith will be seen as Jane, the cook. Amusing situ ations develop in the plot before the question of the superiority of men is decided. On the same night the Phi Society will present The Dab blers, a comedy by John Kirk patrick, with a college setting.! Casting for the play began | earlier this week, and commit-1 tee chairmen will be named soon. Louvene Jordan, Phi president, is in charge of the production. The Glamour Girl, a farce in one act with a cast of five girls, will be produced by the Astro Society under the direction of the president, Lois Harmon. Dr. Carlyle Campbell and Dean Charles W. Burts pose with the mid-term graduates, who received their degrees on January 30. They are Meredith Cash, Evelyn Crumpler, Katherine Hudson, Mitchell Lee, Sue Dell Mc Donald, Annalean McLamb, Margaret Weathers Smith, and Oliveira James Warren. COURSE OFFERED IN CHURCH MUSIC TEAS, PARTY PLANNED DURING FOCUS WEEK Marty Davis, social chairman for Religious Focus Week an nounced that several teas and a party will be held during the week. On Sunday afternoon at 4; 30 coffee will be served to the team members, the Committee of One Hundred, and invited guests; Becky Lynn and Mari anna Worth are in charge. Doris Concha will be in charge of a tea Monday afternoon, and in charge of the tea ’Thursday afternoon will be Betty Jo Pit man. There will also be a fac ulty tea Thursday afternoon. These will be held in the Blue Parlor in Johnson Hall from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on their re spective dates. In charge of the campus-wide party to be held in Phi Hall on Wednesday night are Bobbie Swanson, Bobbie Johnson, Lois Harmon, Elsie Corbett, Jane Middleton, Mar jorie Williams, and Shirley Powell. I Astros, Phis Plan Parties Tomorrow Valentine’s Day will be cele brated at Meredith by the Lit erary Societies tomorrow night, February the fourteenth. Each society will entertain separately in its respective hall, where dates will be the guests of the evening. The Phis are carrying out the Valentine theme in decorations and entertainment. Winnie Fitz gerald is chairman of the re freshment committee; Harriett Ashcraft, decoration committee; Hazel Ellington, publicity com mittee; Edith Stephenson, date j committee; and Marie Snelling I and Louvene Jordan, Phi presi dent, will direct the entertain ment. Elsie Corbett of the Astro so ciety, who is in charge of enter tainment, has announced that the Valentine theme will be car ried out by “Your Heart’s De sire,” and “Queen and King of Hearts.” Other officials are Catherine Campbell, chairman of food committee; Lena Glenn ; Highfill, date committee; Doris ! Williamson, clean-up commit tee; Jean Outlaw, publicity com mittee; and Charlotte Bowman, decoration committee. The entertainment will begin i at 7:30 p.m. and will continue! until approximately 9:30. ! Dr. Harry E. Cooper, head of the Department of Music, has announced plans for the first Summer School of Church Mu sic to be held at Meredith dur ing 1948, immediately following the close of the regular summer session. This school will cover a pe riod of six days, July 19 through 24. It will consist of an inten sive course of lectures, demon strations, and other activities, planned for the benefit of per sons who are working in the field of church music and desire further training to enable them better to carry on their work. The work will include forums in which individual problems will be analyzed and discussed and solutions suggested. Valu able lists of suitable anthems, solos, and organ pieces will be made available to the students, and as much of it as possible will be actually rehearsed. The course will carry one se mester hour of college credit for those who meet the usual en trance requirements of the col lege, and complete the work of the course in a satisfactory manner. The fee for the course will be fifteen dollars payable in ad vance. Partial registrations will not be accepted. Rooms in the dormitories and meals in the dining hall will be available at $14.50 for both men and women. A room reservation fee of $10.00, refundable until July 1, is required with the application. Faculty for the session will be Dr. Carlyle Campbell, president; Dr. Charles W. Burts, dean; Dr. Harry E. Cooper, professor of music; Dr. Benjamin F. Swalin, conductor. North Carolina Sym phony Orchestra; and Miss Bea trice Donley, associate professor of music. Detailed plans and schedule of classes may be obtained from the Music Department. Eight Graduates Receive Degrees Eight mid-term graduates re ceived their A.B. degrees on Friday, January 30. The infor mal service took place in the college parlors, where Dr. Car lyle Campbell delivered the ad dress and conferred the degrees. Those who received degrees are Meredith Cash, Charlotte; Mrs. Evelyn Starling Crumpler, Rocky Mount; Katherine Hud son, Statesville; Mitchell Lee, Varina; Sue Dell McDonald, Fuquay Springs; Annalean Mc Lamb, Benson; Margaret Weathers Smith, Fuquay Spring; and Mrs. Oliveria James Warren, Raleigh. Also, Ann Beal completed the required work for an A.B. degree but will return in May to receive her diploma with her class.
