JOHNSON Uoday, i 3a^kion ^^een Louise Hunt Wins Contest of Distinction Basketball, the sport of the day, has been in the limelight with the tournament going on. The results up to this point are as follows: Juniors, 55; Sophomores 24. Lela Butts is high scorer for the Juniors and Alice Tuttle for the Sophomores. In the second game the Juniors again took the lead with a score of 26-4, with Eunice Andrews “hooking” the basket most frequently. In the Freshman-Sophomore game Faye Nichols and B. J. Shuler helped make the 49-10 score. It was the Freshmen who chalked up a 42-31 score over the Juniors in the first game and also a 21-13 score. (Thanks goes to Catherine Carpenter, say the Freshmen.) Despite the tricky shots of “Lefty” Pugh the Fresh men beat the Seniors 36-7. Credit also goes to “Lefty” for making the 17 points out of the 48-10 score between the Seniors and Sophomores. Many of our stars went to Carolina last week to a play day between Duke, Carolina, W.C., and other neighboring colleges. Those representing Meredith there were B. J. Shuler, Faye Nichols, “Lefty” Pugh, Eunice Andrews, Catherine Carpenter, Harriet Neese, Mildred Hoyle, Hope Hodges, Peggy Thornton, and Jeannette Atkins. Softball season will start on Monday, March 15 if good weather permits. All fans should begin practice now. Congratulations, Miss Cun ningham, for getting your na tional basketball official’s rating renewed at Duke last Saturday by passing a written and practi cal test in basketball officiating. The Meredith Hoof-Print Club ( formerly the Equitation Group) met Wednesday, March 3 to set | up a constitution. Officers chosen j to serve for the remainder of this year were B. J. Johnson; president; Peggy Patrick, vice president; Pat Blackmon, secre tary-treasurer; and Mr. West, adviser. In these difficult days it’s not always easy to mix theory and practice; at least that’s what we hear on every hand, but Louise Hunt has proved it can be done. Using the “theory” from her business English class last semes ter, Louise has become the win ner of a nation-wide contest sponsored by Time magazine for students in journalism and busi ness English. The contest was to determine the actual pulling power of ten sales letters which, results show, students are better able to judge than teachers. After all entries were in, the sales office of Time sent out the ten contest letters and tabulated their effectiveness as results came in. If, any time within the next year, you want to know “what in the world interests women” (one of the themes of the letters being used by Time now), per haps Louise will be able to give you some information. Her prize is a year’s subscription to Life, Time or Fortune.
