Spring Fad Upsets
Meredith Routine
By BEVERLY BATCHELOR
Burned noses, peeling skin,
and lobster-red appendages have
invaded the campus! Meredith
is turning out a crop of girls in
variegated colors. Faculty mem
bers are bemoaning the steadily
increasing number of failing stu
dents, forgotten conferences, and
cut classes. Neglected boy
friends are disgustedly shouting,
“O. K., if that means more to
you. . .” Miss Barnette is pessi
mistically stocking up an abund
ant supply of Ungentine. Why
all the commotion? Yes—you
guessed it—sun-kissed maidens
are the campus rage once more,
and when Meredith determines
to get those luscious, golden-
brown complexions on her cam
pus, she does, regardless of con
sequences. But how far can a
college go? Bare legs, suspi
ciously protruding from behind
the pillars of Johnson Hall, have
been sighted; now reservations
have to be made for places on
a third-floor porch; questions
such as “Like to take in a movie?
How about a date? Want to
translate some French? Aren’t
you going to class?”—all are be
ing answered in the positive neg
ative, and why? Because Sally
and Jane and Betty and numer
ous others have just gotta take
a sunbath. Hour upon hour of
patient sunning! Minutes wasted
scrubbing away iodined baby
oil! Days spent with agonizing
burns! Is it worth it? Just ask
that favored minority who have
braved the ordeal and success
fully emerged with skins of
golden brown. Now their cry is
“Down with the lily-white an
gels!” Don’t be surprised to hear
any day that this new require
ment has been added to our cur
riculum; “To graduate, a Mere
dith student must have four sem
esters of suntan.” Who knows?
Some day this fad may replace

Meredith College has just ex
perienced a bright, sunny May
Day for the first time in four
years. On Saturday, May 1,
Queen Mary Dell Fales reigned
over a gay and colorful after
noon of festivities. The Queen
carried a bouquet of purple iris,
and the attendants carried
American Beauty roses.
The theme for the day was
“The Pipes of Pan.” Dances
were given by the folk dance
classes and the creative rhythms
group. There was the tradi
tional winding of the May Pole.
High school seniors were in
vited for the weekend as guests
of the college. On Saturday
night there was a party honor
ing the visitors. The day’s activ
ities closed Saturday at 10:00
p.m. when the B. S. U. Council,
with Betsy Ann Morgan in
charge, presented a candlelight
service in the court.
