junior class. In high school. Sue
was captain of the girls’ basket
ball team at Gretna. During her
three months in college, she has
taken part in hockey, soccer, and
volley-ball at Meredith, and
plans to play basketball and soft-
ball later in the year.

Hodges, Betty Jane Shuler, Sally
Massey, Drake Morgan, Ann
Cannady, Peggy Patrick, Marty
Davis, Betty Yates, Doris

Christmas offering for foreign
missions was received at the
Y.W.A. circle meetings. The
theme was “The World and the
Song.”
Friday, Dec. 3 was the yearly
World Day of Prayer. On this
day the chapel speaker was Miss
Alberta Steward, a Missourian,
home on furlough from the Bap
tist American College in Recife,
Brazil, where she is dean of
women. The Day of Prayer was
ended with a devotional service
of directed prayer at the evening
vespers.
In anticipation of the coming
holidays the monthly mass meet
ing in the Rotunda on Wednes
day, Dec. 8, at 6:45 p.m. was
given over chiefly to a demon
stration of Student Night at
Christmas, a program given by
students in their home churches
during the holidays. The vespers
program during the week of Dec.
6-10 was also full of the Christ
mas spirit, portraying a cos
tumed picture of Christmas in
every land, directed by Martha
Smith, Jane Earl Burch and
Fran Altman.

December 7, the Meredith Col
lege student body elected Jeanne
Dickens May Queen. Jeanne is
college marshal and art editor
of the Acorn. Edith Cooper was
elected maid of honor.

Science Club Hears
Botany Professor
Dr. D. B. Anderson, professor
of botany at North Carolina
State college, spoke informally
to the members of the Barber
Science Club on November 16 on
the subject of tobacco plant
physiology and his research on
the tobacco leaf sucker. He illu
strated his talk with slides deal
ing with the research he is
doing in that line and discussed
methods of preventing the
growth on tobacco of the para
sites which absorb strength
from the leaves and damage the
crop.
Dr. Anderson is at present en
gaged in the second revision of
the textbook on Plant Physi
ology of which he is co-author
with Dr. Myer of Ohio State
college.
DR. JOHNSON SPEAKS
ON SUMMER TRIP
Dr. Mary Lynch Johnson, pro
fessor of English, was the
speaker at a meeting of the
(Granddaughters’ Club Novem
ber 19. Dr. Johnson reviewed
some of her experiences during
her recent summer trip through
England and Scotland.
Part of the business session of
the club was devoted to a report
from Ann McRacken and Shirley
Bone, chairmen of the Needle
work Guild committee. In co
operation with the Raleigh Guild
drive for clothing, they stated
donations from Meredith to in
clude fifty baby garments and
seven dollars in cash.
Said the raindrops to the par
ticle of dust, “This settles you.”

SIGMA PI ALPHA
The Meredith Chapter of
Sigma Pi Alpha had a Christmas
party on Thursday, Dec. 9 in the
Hut. Members of the State
College Chapter were guests.
Highlights at the party were
the traditional breaking of the
Spanish pihata and the singing
of Christmas carols in German,
French, and Spanish. The Christ
mas theme was also carried out
in decorations consisting of red
candles and greenery.
