i \ 1 Page Six THE TWIG March 18, 1949 Violinist Is To Appear In Concert The noted American violinist, Isaac Stern, will appear in con cert on Monday night, April 4, in Memorial Auditorium m the fourth of the current series of concerts sponsored by the Ra leigh Civic Music Association. Mr Stern returned last No vember from a European tour and is now on his seventh na- , tional concert tour which he be gan this year as soloist with the New York Philharmonic Sym phony in Carnegie Hall. A resi dent of San Francisco since he was one year old, Isaac Stern, called “America’s 28-year-old violin virtuoso,” is the only major violinist of the concert world who is exclusively a prod uct of American environment and training. Since his debut in New York in 1937, concert tours and albums of Columbia Records have in creased Mr. Stern’s He was heard playing the vio core for John Garfield m Warner Brothers’ recent movie, “Humoresque.” Having performed with num erous symphony orchestras oyer America, Mr. Stern appeared last summer before his to abroad on the Lewisohn btaa- ?um concert series with the New York Philharmonic and also witn the Boston Symphony under Serge Koussevitsky at the Berk shire Symphonic Festival at Tanglewood. Next summer will go to South America for the first time. Tuesday night’s concert was the third in the current series of six Civic Music Concerts. A native of Russia who was educated in France and has since become an American citizen. Miss Tourel presented a varied program which included selec tions from the works of Haydn, Handel, Bach, Schumann, De bussy, and Rachmaninoff. Making her American debut in New York in 1942 with Arturo Toscanini, Miss Tourel formerly sang with the Paris Opero-Comi- que until 1940. She is noted for her command of seven lang uages, and as a leading member of the Metropolitan Opera she had the honor in March 1945 of being the first mezzo-soprano to sing the coloratura role of Rasina in the first original performance of The Barber of Seville in the history of the Metropolitan. Recently released by Colum bia Records is Miss Tourel’s al bum of Rachmaninoff songs in Russian and an album of mezzo- coloratura arias by Rossini in Italian, which received the Annual Records Award of 1947 for the best operatic album of that year. Dr. and Mrs. Carlyle Camp bell entertained on Saturday, March 5, at their home on Fur- ches Street at a buffet supper honoring the new members of the faculty and administrative- staff of the college. This has. been an annual custom of Presi dent and Mrs. Campbell for the past several years. The table was covered with a lace cloth and centered with an arrangement of spring flowers and candles. A color scheme of orange was carried out in the menu and decorations. Guests were Mrs. Lieshman A. Peacock, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur L. Thomas, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. John S. Huckabee, Mr. and Mrs. B. E.
