Write Thank-You Letters
For a new realization of what
real gratitude and thankfulness
really is, stop by and take a look
at some of the letters from the
French law student or the
German students who have
received packages from the
language classes here at Mere
dith.
Mrs. Freund, who teaches
German and French in the
college Modern Language De
partment and who is still in
contact with friends back in her
native Germany, has some inter
esting tales to tell of the sending
of Christmas packages abroad
by her language classes last year
and this year also.
The letters themselves make
interesting reading, too—don’t
worry, the German letters are
thoughtfully written in English
and the French letters aren’t too
hard.
Toni de la Chaise, who is a
French commercial law student
in Nancy, France, writes of
French food, politics and current
attitudes in his homeland; and
his naive enjoyment of American
food items sent to him explains
one of his statements, “In
France, to eat is not a problem
but a religion,” but food still
remains a problem abroad for
awhile, at least.
Toni has enclosed in many of
his letters some newspaper clip
pings of a series of articles
written by Jean Cocteau, a
French movie producer, about
his impressions of New York
and the American people whom
he observed while on a short
visit to this country.
The packages to German
students, which were sent this
Christmas in socks, were sent
first to a German professor in
Karlsruhe who had taught Mrs.
Freund’s husband; and, after his
recent death, to his wife, for
distribution. The students who
received the gifts this year wrote
their thank-you letters in very
good English, and all of them
are strikingly sincere in their ap
preciation.

At the annual meeting of the
Student Legislature, which was
held last Friday and Saturday,
Meredith’s bill to establish more
Child Guidance Clinics in the
state was passed by both houses.
The bill was introduced in the
House of Representatives by
Shirley Powell and in the Senate
by Lucy Currin.
Elsie Corbett of Meredith was
elected Recording Clerk of the
House for this session, while
Emily Pool was elected Reading
Clerk of the Senate. The Legisla
ture was unusually late in con
vening this year because of the
late adjournment of the General
Assembly.
Other Meredith official dele
gates to the Legislature, which
included college students from
over the state, were Patsy Emory
and Hazel Williamson. The bill
introduced by the Meredith
delegation was drawn up by a
committee from the Student
League of Women Voters with
Peggy Benbow as chairman.
The Legislature considered
such bills and resolutions as
those concerning a world federa
tion, matters of repealing certain
segregation laws, the signing of
a non-communist affadavit by
students and faculty of state-
supported institutions, the elimi
nation of capital punishment,
and the formation of new con
gressional districts in the state.
Sophs Plan Picnic
For Next Thursday
The last of the sophomore
“six-weeks get-togethers” will
be on the twenty-sixth of May,
the official last day of exams. For
this farewell social Betty Penny
and Carol Parker, co-chairmen
of the arrangements committee,
suggested at the last sophomore
class meeting that the class have
a picnic, and the idea was ac
cepted. Further votings by the
class decided that the girls might
bring dates and that the picnic
would be held at Gresham’s
Lake. Transportation will be
provided by dates’ cars and a
truck.
