Roxanne Valias’ painting, shown above, was awarded the blue ribbon at the Fair, and Betty Moore, another Meredith senior, won second prize in that division. Roxanne is president of the day students of Meredith. DR, EDWMI% ROTEAT SEMMARtZES LIFE OF ALRERT SCHWEITZER FOR RELIGIOIS CLCR Q “A Modern Saint” was the term used by Dr. Edwin McNeill Poteat, pastor of Pullen Me morial Baptist Church, to de scribe Albert Schweitzer last evening, November 3, at the Freeman Religion Club meeting. Dr. Poteat, who has made an extensive study of the life of this theologian, doctor, organist, and missionary, gave a review of Schweitzer from his early child hood to the present time. Schweitzer, who began his career in the field of music by pumping the organ in the old home church, has become one of the world’s greatest organists and a famed authority on Bach. At the age of thirty he was not only a renowned musician but a great theologian. He made the remark that he would do the ANNUAL PALIO (Continued from page one) ent languages department. Consequently, he entered medical school in order to pre pare himself to be a missionary doctor. Such a decision brought forth critical remarks. Why should a man of such muscial talent want to be a doctor? The years that have followed in the life of Albert Schweitzer, most of them spent at Lamboene in Africa, have been years of service for others. WILLIAM IVEY (Continued from page one) Carolina she has done graduate work at the University of Mexi co in Mexico City and at Texas A. & M. At both institutions Senora Ivey took advanced courses in literature in which her classmates were Mexicans and all the lectures were in Spanish. At present she is working on her master’s degree at Duke. Her thesis is being done on the modern Spanish essayist and puhilosopher, Unamuno. She has also done biographical re search on modern Spanish novel ists for that department at Duke. Senora Ivey has had wide teaching experience. Prior to coming to Meredith she taught high school classes of mixed Mexican and American students in La Feria, Texas. She also taught in the Presbyterian Mis sion School in Fort Worth. During one summer she was asked by the Home Mission De partment of the Christian Church to direct Vacation Bible Schools and teacher courses in Spanish churches. Both she and her husband are intensely interested in lan guages. Mr. and Mrs. Ivey first met at Texas Christian, where he was an instructor and she was a student assistant in the Spanish department. They have been married three years and are now living in Durham, where Mr. Ivey is working on his Ph.D. in the Semitic language depart ment, under the religion de partment at Duke.
