But he was not envious of his living brothers, for Billy was so-o-o happy being the mascot of the Astrotekton Society at a college named Meredith. This Astro goat was not always still, though, for one week in every year he was given power to run and play and jump. This time always came during the fall, when all the new girls at Mere dith were being rushed for society membership; and Billy could hardly wait for this spe cial week to roll around? During this week, Billy Astro had a wonderful time. In the daytime he was always seen standing in front of the post- office at Meredith, guarding all the letters his Astro girls and new students were getting. But at night, this little four-legged member of the Astro family was free to run about all over the campus, helping people in every way possible. (Glairy, who wants to date American boys and learn to play the ukelele, says that she likes Meredith because “happiness seems to be spread all around.” She went to a State pep rally and to the Carolina-State foot ball game and enjoyed both these new experiences, particu larly the parades and music at the game. “But,” she says, “I couldn’t understand why the cheerleaders screamed anc jumped up and down.” She was surprised to see the great num ber of cars there. Lillian came to Meredith at the recommendation of her teacher in China, Miss Innabel Coleman. She likes the system of student work here, with a large number of students work ing part of their way through college, and would like to take it back to China with her so that more people could go to college. For entertainment Barbara Harper and Betsy Cannady did a scene from “Mary Queen of Scots” to show the serious side of our work. After that, Sally Massey, acting as mistress of ceremonies, introduced some of the new stu dents who displayed various talents in a talent show. Every one seemed to enjoy the program By Betsy Cannady and the refreshments that were served after the program. When Miss Mayes spoke to the group, she told of the plans for the year. There are three plays under consideration for the fall production: “Career Angel,” “My Sister Eileen” and “Take Care of My Little Girl.” Any of these plays would pro vide delightful entertainment for everyone. Next spring. Miss Mayes plans to attempt a Shakespearean drama using an all girl cast.
