Dr. Tilley Travels
With Seminar
Perhaps some of you remem
ber Sherwood Eddy, a slight,
white-haired gentleman in his
80’s who spoke in chapel last
spring. Last summer Dr. Ethel
Tilley, psychology professor at
Meredith, toured England, France
Swtizerland, Germany, Italy, and
Yugoslavia with the Sherwood
Eddy Seminar, composed of
teachers, clergymen, lawyers,
business men, and college presi
dents.
Back now at Meredith, Dr. Til
ley recalls the trip with a great
deal of pleasure. “Although
much sightseeing was included
in the tour, our primary ob
jective was studying current
European problems and con
ferring with top European of
ficials about these problems.
Wherever the Seminar traveled,
it was welcomed by represent
atives of the state departments
in every country. In England
we were entertained by the
Archbishop of Canterbury and
Lady Aster, and met Chancellor
of the Echecquer Butler and
Clement Atlee. In Germany we
conferred with Burgerleister
Reuter, of West Berlin, and in
Yugoslavia we were received by
Tito.”
As part of the educational
study, the Seminar was taken
among other places to the Rus
sian zone of Berlin, where they
found the style of living much
poorer, and the United Nations
and the International Commit
tee of Red Cross in Geneva,
Switzerland. Everywhere in the
western European countries they
found that people-wished, rather,
to see United States tariff low

Well, did you get to the
Albeneri Trio Concert? And was
it everything I said? If you
liked it, then you’ll want to at
tend Alden Quartet on Saturday,
November 8. Remember the
delightful Sonata concert we
just recently attended? Well,
the same Edgar Alden who
played the violin then is going
to be in this concert. It is un
fortunate that the Baptist Stu
dent Union Convention meets
at the same time as the Chamber
Music Concert. A lot of people
who want to hear the Quartet
will probably have to miss it.
If you’ve had as many tests,
and who hasn’t, as I’ve had
lately, you’ll appreciate the fol
lowing quotations which I
noticed in Etude. These quota
tions are actual quotes from
examination papers in a private
school:
“A work for five instruments
is called a fiftet.”
“The saxaphone was invented
by Jimmy Dorsey.”
‘The brass are coronets; the
percussions are symbols; the
woodwinds are picalos.”
“Schubert was born in Poland
and died in Paris of T.B. His
best work is the Unfinished Sym
phony, sometimes known as
Finlandia.”
“Schumann’s teacher was try
ing to break up the romance be
tween his daughter and his
pupil. Knowing this fact helped
me to enjoy the composition.”
The Big Sister-Little Sister
Party was a big success. One
of the highlights of the evening
was some solos by Carolyn Hall.
Those of you who missed her
rendition of “Stardust” really
missed a beautiful song.
Victoria de Los Angeles, a
metropolitan soprano, is going to
give her concert Monday night,
November 3. It’ll be over by the
time this issue comes out, so
we’ll talk about it later.
