C., FRIDAY, DECEMEBER 11, 1953 No. 4 ANNUAL CHRISTMAS BANQUET PRECEEDS HOLIDAY RECESS Chorus Gives Concert Sunday — n M On December 18, the eve of the Christmas recess, the annual Christmas banquet for students and faculty will be held in the college dining hall at 6:00 p.m. The formal event is sponsored jointly by the Student Government Association, Athletic Association, and Baptist Student Union. Special guests will be Dr. and Mrs. Campbell, Dean and Mrs. Pea cock, Mrs. Martin and Zee Martin. Plans for the entertainment not complete. On the following day the holi day vacation begins at the end of each student’s regularly scheduled classes. Classes will be resumed on Mon day, January 4. HONORED Trip Is Planned By A.|.\Board . Dr. Campbell is a native of Buie’s Creek and a graduate of Wake For est College. He formerly taught at Coker College and State College and has been president of Meredith since 1939. He succeeded Kirby Walker, su perintendent of Jackson, Missis sippi Schools, as president of the association. PHIS PRESENT FASHION SHOW DECEMBER 11 The Philaretian Society will pre sent a Christmas fashion show tonight at 8:00 p.m. in Jones Au ditorium. Models for the show will be Mary Edna Grimes, Dot Paschal, Jo Bond Brock, Pat Allen, Dorsey Swisher, Barbara Stanley, Alyce Epley, Pansy Lee, Lynn Belton, Pat Helmick and Joanne Brown. The dresses shown will be from Ellisberg’s Dress Shop in Raleigh. Admission is ten cents. ASTROS MAKE ANNUAL VISIT TO ST. AGNES The Astros will make their an nual Christmas visit to the children of St. Agnes Hospital on Decem ber 18. They will’ carry gifts and candy, toys, fruits and books. They will also carry ice cream for the children. The society has sponsored such a trip each Christmas for the past three years. The Astros change their Santa Claus disguise for a Bunny’s on Eas ter and make another trip to St. Agnes. Riley, Swisher, Campbell, and Taylor Are Other Attendants In an election held by the student body on Thursday, Novem ber 19, Joanne Brown and Eliza beth Crenshaw were chosen May Queen and Maid of Honor respec tively. These girls were selected from a group of five beauties which had been previously nominated from the senior class. The other nominees were Shirley Graham, Jane Campbell, and Marjorie Barnes. The college careers of the two girls elected have been somewhat parallel. Both were May Court rep resentatives from their class when they were sophomores, both are Chief Marshals of their respective societies, and both are members of the Playhouse. Joanne, a religion major from Southport, has music as her related field. She is president of the Mere dith Chorus and is a member of the Sextet and the Triple Trio. She was elected Most Attractive by the Sen ior Class and is a member of the (Continued on page three) Miss Donley Directs Katie Lee Ciirrin Plays The Meredith College Chorus, under the direction of Miss Beatrice Donley and accompanied by Katie Lee Currin, will present its tradi tional Christmas concert on Sun day, Dec. 13 at 4 p.m. in Jones Auditorium. The Chorus will present first “O Come, O Come, Emanuel,” a uni versally known Latin hymn of which the exact origin is unknown. The hymn was adapted from a French Missal in 1854. This exhibit be a feature of the annual Christmas show of the Raleigh Garden Club on December 11 and 12 at the Woman’s Club. The usual Christmas sweets in unusual attire will be shown. A kitchen setting is being used this year to give variety and to add a homey atmosphere. The exhibit will open December 11 at 1:00 p.m. and will last through 10:00 p.m. on December 12. The display will be shown here at Meredith on the following Monday, December 14, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. especially for the benefit of the college commun ity, and from 7:30 to 10:00 for the State College Homemaker’s Club. TWIG STAFF Four new members have joined the Twig business staff. They are Sara Martin, Jo Ann Selley, Judy Baker, and Joyce Ballard. A A CHRISTMAS LIST For your convenience the A.A. Board each year compiles an al phabetical list of the names of resident and day students, faculty and administration, with the home address of each. These lists will be sold on each hall by A.A. mem bers for twenty-five cents each. It’s a necessity for sending those Christmas cards or notes during the holidays and a very good thing to take with you when you are traveling and would like to call or drop in on some of your friends.
