THE TWIG
Three Whole, Five Half Sets of Twins at Meredith
\ i
By KIRKSEY SINK and
BESS PEELER I
“Hi Dot - or - Doris.” (Which is j
it?) That’s a typical question when!
meeting one of the Knotts going on;
her way. Dot and Doris compose
one of the three very identical
pairs of twins at Meredith and one
of the three reasons for constant
confusion on campus. But here’s the
clue to who is who in the Knott pair
—check the fourth finger, left hand
and if there is an evident sparkle,
the hand belongs to Dot. Ed Preston
placed the ring there on February 7,
and since Dot is left-handed,
(Doris being right-handed) she has
had plenty of opportunities to show
the ring at its best advantage.
This pair are alike only in their
looks, and here is the proof. Dot
chose the field of mathematics for
concentration while Doris’ major
is history. They both did their stu
dent teaching at Broughton last se
mester and admitted that the stu-^
dents became “a little confused.”
Doris is interested in archives as
a possible future. Teaching is the
profession chosen by Dot. These
two haven’t dressed alike since high
school days and they answered “No,”
when asked “Do you ever think
alike?”
Dot wonders why people always
ask first off, “Who is older?” That
one stumped the interviewer, but
it must be simply a matter of hu
man curiosity. Dot admits a senior
ity of fifteen minutes, however.
Doris is more the leader of the
two while Dot is less conservative
in dress. They do wear their hair
alike and choose the same shades
of make-up. You’d never know
they were twins, overlooking exter
ior proof of it.
Their second year and half their
third at Meredith were spent suiting
with the McRackan twins who are
the next pair of interest.
Becky and Ducky are really two
peas in a pod. “I” means both of
them in any conversation you carry
on, which could become quite mud
dling to the third party. They defi
nitely are alike in “thought, word,
and deed.” Becky can think of a
number, whisper it in your ear, and
Ducky can tell you the exact num
ber—no cheating, either. Friends
often find it confusing to hear Ducky
start a statement and Becky finish
it, but it is a normal occurence with
the twins. Both girls are most inter
ested in sports—any kind. The past
four summers have been filled with
seaside sports at the Baptist Assem
bly, Fort Caswell, while winters at
Meredith offer all variety of sports.
In the mornings Ducky can dress
and go to breakfast before Becky
awakes; then later, down will come
Becky dressed identically, all un
planned, just a matter of thinking
alike.
Their plans for the future are
also the same, teaching. Becky
wants the second grade and Ducky
the third in the same school.
Yet, they are not totally alike
for Ducky says, “I eat the most!”
But Becky adds “1 weigh the most!”
You can figure that one out.
Fall semester brought two more
new faces (or should I say one?)
—to Meredith. The Kimreys, Janie
and Nancy, can be distinguishec
only by the mole above Nancy’s lip.
They say the only person who can
tell them apart on campus is Pansy
Lee from their home town who can
even tell their voices apart on the
telephone. (No small accomplish
ment.) At home their younger
brother solves the problem effi
ciently by simply calling them both
“Sis.”
When the twins were very small
they couldn’t understand why they
both were not named either Janie
or Nancy. Why should two such
look-alikes have different names?
Now that is a good question.
Janie and Nancy are very much
alike, too—even down to dreaming
the same dreams. Since music is
their special interest, they are ma
joring in public school music. Both
girls love dancing and singing. As
a side interest, swimming is a favo
rite activity. They specialize in col
lecting pictures of other twins, hav
ing gathered a large number. Last
year, the two went to the Twin
Convention in High Point and for
the first time dated twins. That
could prove complicating and did,
they said, for during the summer,
they’d switch about with no one be
ing the wiser until finally somebody
would break down and confess.
They always get sick at the same
time, both having had a bout with
the flu this past week-end. Their
parents visited them, bringing two
of each prescription from their doc
tor. Janie and Nancy have also just
started wearing glasses. They love
the same foods, especially “chicken
and pecan pie!”
Above are some of the .Meredith tvrins. Not all of them are enrolled here. They are-
Becky and Ducky McRackan, Lorene and Lorette Oglesby, Cathy and A. J. Spell,
Bill and Helen Colby, Dot and Doris Knott and Janie and Nancy Kimrey. You
^ess which is which in each pair. Not pictured are Phoebe and Luther Bamhardt,
Dons and Jarvis MacMillan, and Effie and Steve Sneeden.

Growing flowers furnishes them
with still another hobby, and their
love for animals keeps them busy.
All these interests make for two
very interesting people.
Are your eyes playing tricks on
you yet? Well, hold on; there’s more
to come. Now we’re ready for the
“separates.” I wonder if you’ll be
as surprised as I was to find these
Meredith “Angels” have counter
parts in other places.
For instance, our own editor
Lorette Oglesby, has her facsimile
at Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn.
Lorene and Lorette are perfect rep
licas of each other. Lorette says
they often seem to think alike, even
when apart. Lorette changed her
hair-do from a center to a side part
witli souiy curled bangs replacing
straight ones only to discover that
Lorene had done the same thing,
each being unaware of the action
of the other! Also they have bought
similar clothes without realizing it.
Both girls are interested in horse
back riding and tennis, and they
make about the same grades. But
as for a career, they take separate
paths. While Lorette spends most
of her time with Shakespeare to
complete that English major, Lorene

is busily adding a B.S. to her name,
having finished work to become a
graduate nurse at Baptist Hospital.
Helen Colby couldn’t bring her
twin to Meredith with her. Bill didn’t
quite meet the requirements, but,
listen gals, he may fit some of yours.
Right now the Marines claim his
attention; he’s in Electronic School
at Great Lakes. Before this he spent
two years in Georgia Military Aca
demy. Helen is noticeably blond,
while Bill’s 6'2" frame is topped
off with brown hair. Helen says
she was the biggest until recent years,
so she took care of Bill while they
were young, putting on his snow-suit
and other such difficult manipu
lations. They’re not at all alike,
having different interests and plans.
Bill has been away from home, so
they’re not as close as they might
have been.
Another split pair are Phoebe
and Luther Earnhardt. Phoebes
tvvin, although the younger by five
minutes, started early in giving di
rections to girls. He learned to talk
first and used to give her directions,
because she had first conquered
the art of walking. Phoebe says she’s
been taking orders from men ever

since. Luther’s finishing premed
this year and enters Duke Medical
School next fall. They have always
been very close, but even when
they were together in high school
were independent, never even col
laborated on homework. When
asked if they looked alike, Phoebe
said “Well, he is brunette, is almost
six feet tall, has green eyes and . . .
he has a dimple in his chin and I
don’t.”
Kathy Spell is the identical other
half of A. J. She’s at Wake Forest
studying biology with future plans
of an M.D. from Bowman Gray
or physical therapy work at Duke.
These doubles may look alike, but
according to the Meredith half, they
disagree on almost all small things.
A. J. is lefthanded and Kathy, right;
A. J.’s favorite color is pink, Kathy’s
blue; when Kathy’s hair is short,
A. J.’s is long. Say, it looks like
these two missed a lot of friendly
sisterly bickering! Even with all
these differences they have many
similar interests, sewing and travel
ing topping the list. In high school
they fooled others by dressing alike
all the time, and they do it occa
sionally now for the fun of it.
Doris McMillan’s twin, Jarvis, is
better known to the Meredith
“angels” than some of these others
because he manages to find his way
here from State quite frequently.
His major is furniture organization
and management, and one of his
main interests is hot rods. Jarvis
was born slightly before 11:00 one
Sunday morning, and the family
went to church proud of the new
baby boy. But when they left the
church at 12:00, they were surprised
to hear that Doris, too, had made
an appearance in the big, wide
world. They think very much alike
and often one will finish a job begun
by the other with no one being able
to tell the difference.
The other half of the Sneeden
pair is male, too—Steve. As six
other children had previously made
up the Sneeden family, there weren’t
many names left for the parents to
choose from for the new additions.
So they decided on Steve and Ef
fie, their own names, until they could
think of other ones, but these held
through the years. Effie says she and
Steve are very close and that they
do look alike. They’re both inter
ested in church work. Horseback
riding is the favorite pastime of
these two. Steve is working in Wil
mington, now, so they don’t have as
much time to get together in these
activities. Their one point of disa
greement lies in who’s going to drive.
That’s a common habit between
most any brother and sister.
It’s been fun and also revealing
to find out all the backstage facts
about our twins. The only trouble
is, it makes us feel we’ve missed
something special in not being one
of two. Oh, well, maybe fate will
place a double bundle on our door
step sometime in the distant future.
