Behind the Scenes
We Recognize Pam Hartsell
“Pam” hails from Concord, N. C.,
where she attended the local high
school. Lack of space prevents our
mentioning her honors there, but
she has already made quite a name
for herself at Meredith, which will
give you an idea of her capabilities.
Not only is “Pam” a Dean’s List
girl, but she was also nominated for
secretary of the B.S.U. during elec
tions, was chosen for good posture
during the week posture was em
phasized, was on the nominating
committee for campus elections, and
is on the Oak Leaves staff now.
Pamela, dramatic, intelligent, de
pendable, and sweet, is also a reader
and writer of poetry, as well as an
occasional contributor for the Twig.
She works well with people and with
her freshman class.

How did you like being hostess
to the 2,000 high school students
that were on our campus March 11
and 12 for the District Music Con
test? I’m sure if you listened to the
groups as they performed, you en
joyed the fresh energy with which
they sang and played and learned a
great deal from them. 1 want to

her photograph album.

On Our Popular Second Floor
On Friday, March 11, a work
shop on recreational leadership,
open to all Meredith students was
held in the hut and conducted by
Miss Virginia Gregory from The
N. C. State Recreation Depart
ment. Approximately twenty Mere
dith and State students participated
in the games of song and marching.
Suggestions were given by Miss
Gregory about helping people to
get acquainted in games, about in
cluding everyone in the fun, and
about anticipating awkwardness.
The workshop participants enjoyed
ice-cream cones after the fun.

thank all those students who took
part in the contest and helped direct
the students about the campus and
make things run smoothly. The will
ing co-operation of most of the stu
dents who were called upon to help,
make sponsoring an event of this
size really a pleasure. I’m sure that
the high school students visiting on
our campus sensed this spirit of
friendliness and enjoyed their short
stay here.
The contest is one sure sign of
spring and campus elections are
another. This is true in the music
department as all over the campus.

In the spring it is said that our
minds turn to thoughts of poetry
and all the beauty unfolding about
us. Since music is so completely an
expression of this beauty and love
liness, it is natural that we should
find many thoughts expressed of
music and its qualities. Lord Byron
has said:
There’s music in the sighing of
a reed;
There’s music in the gushing of
a rill;
There’s music in all things, if
men had ears;
Their earth is but an echo of
the spheres.
But rnusic is not in nature alone.
It is within us. Shakespeare has
said:
The man that hath no music
in himself.
Nor is not mov’d with concord
of sweet sounds.
Is fit for treasons, stratagems,
and spoils;
The motions of his spirit are
dull as night.
And his affections dark as Ere
bus;
Let no such man be trusted.
With all this beauty about us, we
all must feel as this poet did. It is
the expression of spring:
All Nature’s music is lovely,
Music so wond’rous rare;
Its melody, rhythm, harmony,
Gloriously fill the air.
