DAY STUDENTS, VANN TRIUMPH AT ANNUAL PLAY DAY, APRIL 20 Athletic Association Installs New Officers At Annual Service April 20 proved to be a day of fun, fellowship, and good food for students, faculty, and families of the faculty members, for on this day was held Meredith’s traditional Play Day. The student body and faculty were welcomed by Kathleen Sim mons, chairman of the day’s activi ties, and President Carlyle Camp bell, after which Mr. James Eads of the biology department and Judy Young, a sophomore, were crowned as reigning Duke and Duchess. Groups Compete In Cheers, Songs The next event of the afternoon was the presentation of cheers and songs by the faculty, dormitories, and day students. First and second place winners of. the song were Brewer Dormitory and the Day Stu dents, respectively; and first and second place winners of the cheer were Vann and Faircloth Dormi tories, respectively. The faculty, day students, and dormitories also competed in the races. The following were the first FACVLTY, CLUB HOA'OR SEISIORS W ITH PICNICS The faculty will entertain the Senior Class at the annual Faculty- Senior Picnic on Wednesday, May 11. Over-all planning for the picnic is being done by the faculty com mittee on social functions. Chairman of the committee is Miss Louise Fleming, Dean of Students. The seniors and the faculty mem bers and their families will gather ■ at the Chimney at 5:30 for a picnic supper and brief informal entertain ment presented by faculty members. The Barber Science Club held its last meeting for the school year at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J, H. | Eads, Jr., on Tuesday night, April 26. The group honored its graduat ing members with a picnic supper. and second placc winners of each race; (1) three-legged race — Fair cloth and Vann Dormitories, (2) suitcase race — Faircloth and Brewer Dormitories, (3) over- under relay — Faircloth Dormitory and the faculty, (4) sack race — Vann and Faircloth Dormitories, (5) egg race — Brewer Dormitory and Day Students. Faculty Defeats Students Two other main events of the afternoon were the faculty-studcnt volleyball game and the faculty- studcnt softball game. The faculty (with the help of frequent substi*: tutes) triumphed in both encounters. Throughout the afternoon, indi vidual challenge play-offs were held in such games and sports as bridge, horse shoes, croquet, tennis, ping- pong, checkers, hopscotch, and ca nasta. These competitions were held in the court and in the gymnasium. After a picnic supper was held in the court, the first and second place winners of the entire Play Day were announced. The Day Students cap tured first place and Vann Dormi- tory took second placc honors. The theme of the installa tion was “The Big Four.” Repre senting "The Big Four,” were Carolyn Barrington, retiring presi dent, as a Duke Blue Devil; Kathleen Simmons, retiring vice- president, as a Wake Forest Dcacon; Anne Britton, retiring treasurer, as a Carolina Ram; and Carolyn Nich- olds, retiring secretary, as a member of the State Wolfpack. Oath Of Office Administered Carolyn, after expressing a few words of gratitude to the old board and the student body for their sup port and participation in the A.A. functions of this year, administered the oath of office to Kathleen. Kath leen was then recognized as the new president of the Athletic Associa tion for 1960-61. The three other retiring officers relinquished their posts to Nancy Wade, Helen Neblett, and Kappie Weed, who were recognized as vice-president, treas urer, and secretary, respectively. New Board Members Presented After this procedure the metnbers of the new board were recognized and they rcplaccd the old members who had already been introduced to the student body. After Kathleen led these girls in taking the oath of office, the program was concludcd. BSU Leaders Meet The annual Leadership Training Conference of Baptist Students of North Carolina was held during the weekend of April 22-24 In Hickory, students from thirty different cam puses discussed the theme, “The Gospel in the Academic Com munity.” The conference consisted of train ing In BSU leadership with several workshops studying BSU functions. Also, state officers for the coming year were elected, Caulinc Howell from Meredith was a successful can didate for publications chairman. The person holding this position acts as the editor 9f Reveille, the state BSU magazine.
