Page four THE TWIG November 18, 1960 Silver Shield Will Tap Two Aaiociote Members On Tuesday, November. 22, two members of the junior class will be tapped into associate membership in the Silver Shield. At this time during the chapel period, Dr. Norma Rose of the Meredith Eng lish department will speak concern ing the ideals and objectives of the society. The Silver Shield is one of the four honor societies at Meredith. The idea of this honorary leader ship society was first aroused in 1933, but not until the spring of 1935 was the definite organization formed. This organization has as its pur pose the fostering of a better campus spirit and the recognizing of out standing girls who have made con tributions to. Meredith. Characteris tics considered for selection of members are constructive leader ship, Christian character, scholar ship, and service to the school. Pillsbury Company Announces Awards Available To Home Economics Majors Home economics majors graduat ing from January 1961 to June 1961 may apply now for the Pillsbury Awards for 1961. These awards in clude: The Pillsbury Award for 1961 — The award winner will receive a unique “on-the-job” training fellow ship. For one year, beginning July 1, 1961, she will be Associate Direc tor of the Pillsbury Junior Home Service Center. This position has been carcfully planned to afford her a wide range of practical experience in home economics - in - business. In addition to her salary of $4,500, she will receive a grant of $1,000. Center Gives Information The Junior Home Service Center is a consumer service department which seeks to meet young people’s needs for information and guidance on food preparation and home- XEWS IN BRIEF The fall convention of the Stu dent North Carolina Education As sociation was held on Saturday, No vember 12, at the NCEA center in Raleigh. Dr. Leo W. Jenkins, president of East Carolina College, spoke in the morning on the topic, “Education — the Bulwark of Tomorrow.” The afternoon feature was a question and answer period entitled “Questions from Prospective Teach ers.” The panel was composed of former Future Teacher presidents. Janice Meggs, who attended Mere dith and who was president of the NCEA last year, was a panel mem ber. Ten Meredith students attended the convention. Meredith Contributes $1453 Mrs. E. R. Collins was in charge of the United Fund Drive on our campus this year, with Anna Cart- ner serving as the student leader. As a rough total, Meredith con tributed about $1,453 to the drive with student contributions averag ing about fifteen cents per person. The money collected is given to various welfare agencies throughout the city, including the Salvation Army, homes for crippled children, and the Girl and Boy Scouts. This money is vitally important to the agcncies represented, for in this way they obtain their whole means of support. In this drive Meredith did go over the 100 per cent mark. Sophomores And Juniors Tie In Corn Huskin' Competition The annual Meredith College Corn Huskin’ was held on Oc tober 27 in the gymnasium. In the competition the seniors won first prize for costumes; the freshmen won hog calling; the Juniors the tall tale; and the seniors apple bobbing. Also, the sophomores presented the winning class song, and the faculty triumphed in the corn shucking con test. Nancy Wade, vice-president of the Athletic Association, which sponsored the event, presided over Corn Huskin’ activities. By decision of the judges, the sophomores and juniors tied for first place; and the seniors took second place honors. Josey Visits North Carolina High Schools For Meredith Miss Mary Bland Josey, Mere dith’s public relations agent, has traveled extensively over North Carolina this fall. She attends high school College Day Programs and also holds individual appointments. She started on her travels Septem ber 22 and will complete her trips this year on January 10. Already, Greenville, Asheville, Morganton, Winston - Salem, High Point, Shelby, Statesville, Durham, Raleigh, and Charlotte areas have been visited. Miss Josey states that after she gives vocational guidance in Albemarle, Lumberton, Mount Airy, Salisbury, Rocky Mount, Wil son, and Henderson she will spend some time resting. making. The Center has its own staff, offices, and equipment, lo cated in the Minneapolis, Minne sota, headquarters of TTie Pillsbury Company. Six Pillsbury Honor Awards — Six finalists for The Pillsbury Award will receive Honor Awards of $250. Citations for all approved appli cants: Each college may submit up to, but no more than five appli cations for the awards. Applica tions are first screened by the college Scholarship and Awards Commit tee, or its equivalent. Pillsbury will this year present a Citation to all approved applicants. These Ci tations will be sent to the depart ment of home economics for pres entation on awards night or other appropriate occasion. Requirements Are Stated Requisites: Applicants for the awards must be outstanding home economics students with an overall grade average in the upper quar- tile of their home economics gradu ating class. Applicants must be un married; able to meet and deal with people easily and effectively; must have an interest in young people; must be able to express themselves well, in both speech and writing. Application forms are available from the Meredith home econom ics department. Applications must be teceived by The Pillsbury Awards Program no later than No vember 28, postmarked no later than November 23.
