Purpose: The purpose of Meredith
College is to develop in its students
the Christian attitude toward the
whole of life, and to prepare them
for intelligent citizenship, homemak-
ing, graduate study, and for profes
sional and other fields of service. Its
intention is to provide not only
thorough instruction, but also culture
made perfect through the religion of
Jesus Christ. These ideals of acad
emic integrity and religious influence
have always been cherished by Mere
dith.

thern Association of Colleges and
Secondary Schools and the Associa
tion of American Colleges: Liberal
arts member of the National Asso

the American Association of Uni
versity Women.
Degrees Offered: Bachelor of
Arts and Bachelor of Music.
History: Founded by the North
Carolina Baptist Convention, granted
a charter in 1891, first opened to
students in 1899. It was chartered
as the Baptist Female University, a
name changed in 1905 to the Baptist
University for Women, and in 1909
to Meredith College. This last name
was given in honor of Thomas Mere
dith, for many years a recognized
leader of the Baptist denomination in
North Carolina, who in 1838 pre
sented to the Baptist State Conven
tion a resolution urging the establish
ment in or near Ralei^ of “A female
seminary of high order that should
be modeled and conducted on strictly
religious prindples, but that should
be, so far as possible, free from
sectarian influences.”
The institution has had four presi
dents: James Carter Blasingame,
1899-1900; Richard Tilman Vann,
1900-1915; Charles Edward Brew
er, 1915-1939; Carlyle Campbell,
1939-.
College Life Provides
Challenge and Reward
Car doors slam, an animated face
greets you and directs you into John
son Hall. Suddenly, you are here, and
the long summer months of planning,
shopping, and packing are over. Col
lege has opened its doors and your
new self coupled with your old
dreams and desires are swept inside.
Just what is it like to be on the inside
for the first time? To be quite frank
it’s a little frightening, for it is the
culmination of a series of events be
gun as a small child. But the primary
emotion is not fear. The true emotion
is one of hopeful expectation, and it
is this expectation that continuaDy
draws you into college life.
After having fully arrived and
matriculated, the eager freshman finds
orientation to be a full time project. I
Papa and big brother find the first day'
of orientation to be a rather back^
breaking undertaking. But piece by
piece everything fits into place, and
one is lurched into a sea of faces each
holding within its smile the mystery
of an unknown individual and the po
tential of a lasting friendship.
Days seem to evaporate into a mist
of memories as hours of testing, guid
ance, training, and classroom prep
aration go by. Classrooms have a
familiar air about them, and the regu
lar ringing of bells become a timely
reminder. Pigeons fail to wake you
in the morning, and the sound of
your roommate padding about the
room is normal.
Gradually college becomes a word
that can be tossed about as freely as
a child tosses a pillow. College ex
pands from a dream into a reality, and
confusion develops into pleasant rou
tine. Much of the old self remains
feeling secure in a changing environ
ment with the growing realization that
this endeavor is truly “ the fair begin
ning of a time.”
Raleigh Churches Entertain
Students at Welcome Dinners

the freshmen and transfers to the
churches. Both West Raleigh Pres
byterian and Fairmont Methodist
Church held dinners for the Mere
dith Presbyterians and Methodists,
while several of the Baptist churches
joined in giving a “progressive din
ner” for the Baptist girls at Meredith.
The progressive dinner began with
an appetizer at Tabernacle Baptist
Church and ended with dessert at
Forest Hills Baptist Church. Other
churches taking part in the dinner
were First Baptist Church, Hayes
Barton Baptist Church and Pullen
Memorial Baptist Church.
The regular schedule of classes
will begin Wednesday morning. For
the past few days freshmen and
transfers have been involved in a
full schedule of tests, guidance ses
sions, group meetings, and social
events. The councils of the Student
Government Association, the Athe-
letic Association and the Baptist
Student Union as well as other
campus leaders have been serving
as guides and assistants in the execu
tion of the entire program.
Training Classes Are Held
Classes have been conducted by
Faculty and staff members in the
areas of catalogue training, healA
orientation, guidance, and library
training. The members of the stu
dent government association have
been leading discussions periods
aimed at explaining the policies and
regulations of the association.
Counselors Entertain
Friday night the counselors enter
tained at a Big Wheel Party in
the court in order to introduce
campus leaders to the new students.
Saturday and Monday night the stu
dents were presented to the college
oFicials in formal receptions in the
Blue Parlor in Johnson Hall. At the
same time hall parties were arranged
for students not attending the recep
tions.
The program for Sunday included
church attendance and an Open
House in the Hut given by the
counselors for all new students. A
bus tour of Raleigh was conducted
for all new dormitory students for
Tuesday night.
Classes to Start
Registration for classes and the
purchase of textbooks was held on
Monday for the new students and
Tuesday for the old students. Fur
ther events in the orientation pro
gram which are designed to inform
the new students about additional
phases of Meredith campus life will
be held during the first month of
classes.
The orientation program has been
planned by the faculty committee on
orientation of which Miss Mary
Bland Josey is chairman.
