Herndons Give Students Christmas Tree
Meredith girls thank “Pops” for graciously giving his wife’s Christmas tree to the
collegc. Mk> Herndon, standing with him, was in for a surprise when brought
to see her cut tree.
The tall, beautifully-shaped Christ
mas tree in front of Johnson Hall is
a gift to the Meredith girls from
Mr. and Mrs. R. L, Herndon.
“Pops,” as Mr. Herndon is affection
ately called by Meredith students,
explained that this is his way of say
ing Merry Christmas to all his girls.
The tree which is standing in front
of Johnson Hall has a special mean
ing to “Pops” and especially to his
wife. Mrs. Herndon planted the
spruce tree approximately sixteen
years ago in the yard of the Hern
don’s home on East Chatham Street
in Cary. The Herndons recently
moved from this home to a new site
at 216 Urban Drive, Cary. The sile
of their old home is zoned for busi
ness and the property is to be razed.
Mr. Herndon realized that the tree
would make a beautiful Christmas
tree. He understood that the tree
would have to be cut down, so he
decided to bring it to Meredith. It
is at this point that Mrs. Herndon
became sentimental. She stated that
she didn’t really want the tree cut
down because she had enjoyed watch,
ing it grow so much. But “Pops”
wanted this gift to give to the girls at
Meredith, so the tree was cut.
The lighted tree is standing in
front of the college. “Pops” and
Mrs. Herndon wish "everybody a
