May 20,1965 THE TWIG Page Three Five Leaving Faculty Members Retire from the Meredith Community By BLUE McKETHAN At th« end of this school year, several members of the faculty and administration who have served here for many years are leaving Meredith. These people have helped to make Meredith what it is through their hard work and efforts to im prove the college, and they deserve recognition especially now that they are retiring. Mrs. Dorothy Pope Greenwood has been an English instructor here , for six years. She originally came to Raleigh to teach at Saint Mary’s Junior College and married while teaching there. She also taught at North Carolina State College and the State School for the Blind. When ^ asked about her plans for the fu ture, she replied that she will stay home and enjoy life, read lots of books, and look forward to visits from her students. Mrs. Greenwood studied at Randolph-Macon Wom an’s College, Tulane University, and did graduate work at Columbia Uni versity. Going to Have a Good Time Mrs. Martha J. Whilden camc to Meredith in 1951 as Assistant House Director. She had worked for a nearby school for a year before coming here. Mrs. Whilden said that she has no intention of sitting home after her retirement and that she will “have a good time until my money runs out!” Mrs. A. J. Hargett St. lege), spent several years as a field worker for the Sunday School De partment of the Southern Baptist Convention in which capacity she did much travelling. After her hus band’s death she worked with the State Baptist Convention for five years before coming to Meredith in 1955 as Assistant Dean of Students. This summer will mark her tenth year as Dean of Students at sum mer school. After her retirement, Mrs. Smith expects to spend much time with her family and to live at her home in Goldsboro. Rest and Vist Friends Dr. Susanne H. Freund, Associate Professor of Foreign Languages, plans to read, rest, and see her children and friends after this year. Dr. Freund studied in Germany and got her Ph.D. degree in economics from the University of Heidelberg. She taught in the School of Mili tary Government in Charlottesville, Virginia, and one year at Campbell College prior to coming to Mere dith in 1947. While here she has been a faculty advisor, sponsor of the Meredith Christian Association, and founder and sponsor of the Frcnch Club. She is a member of the Modern Language Association, American Association of Teachers of French and German, and the American Association of Univer sity Professors. Mad Hatter Going to Campbell Dr. Ernest F. Canady, Professor of Math, received degrees at Wil liam Jewell College at Liberty, Mis souri; University of Missouri; and he received his Ph.D. from Duke University. He taught at South Dakota University for four years and then spent a year in the Army during World War I. He came here in 1920 and has been head of the department of math for forty-five years. From 1920 to 1925, he taught in Summer School at Missouri Cen tral College. During World War U, he taught at Meredith until 12:00 noon and then at North Carolina State in the afternoon. He is a mem ber of the National Math Fraternity Pi Mu Epsilon and the North Caro lina Academy of Science. After this year he will join the faculty at Campbell College. Hopes to Travel Miss Jennie M. Across From King of Sea Miss Hanyen lives la the home management house where sbe supervises senior home economics majors who must live in the house for four weeks. received her B.S. and M.A. degrees in Home Economics at Columbia University and also did some work toward her Ph.D. there. She has taught at Hood College, Fredrick, Maryland, and Elmire College, New York and done summer work at several schools and universities. She came to Meredith in 1931 to find that she and Miss Brewer had been classmates at Columbia University but did not know each other. Miss Hanyen had traveled in Puerto Rico, Bermuda, and Europe. She is a member of the American and the North Carolina Home Economics As sociations, and the American As sociation of University Women. She plans to visit Lake Ariel, Pennsyl vania, as she is a native of that state, and to be with her sister in Rad ford, Virginia, after her retirement. Not Going to Get Bored Miss Ellen Dozier Brewer was a student at Meredith when her father became the third president. She re turned to Meredith to teach English after the war in 1919 and later got her B.S. and M.A. in Home Economics at Columbia University. In 1922, she came back again to be head of the home economics Department. The Home Manage ment House was built and named in her honor in 1960. She is a mem ber of the American Home Eco nomics Association, the North Caro lina Home Economics Association in which she has held every office, the American Association of Uni versity Women, and the Interna tional Congress on Home Econom ics. She attended the Baptist World Alliance in Stockholm with a group of North Carolinians. Miss Brewer plans to read and put more time into church 'Work after this year. She said that she agrees with Miss Ida Poteat who said there are too many interesting things to do to ever get bored with life.
