The exchange program is an unique new scholastic program for Meredith. Through a program of inter-institutional cooperation, made possible through a planning grant of $7,500 from the Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation, it is possible for North Carolina State University students to take courses here and for Meredith students to enlarge their courses of study at the Uni versity. The proximity of the two institutions also eliminates housing and transportation problems often involved in exchange programs. The program, instigated by Dr. John Yarbrough from Meredith and Dr. Nash N. Winstead of State, was designed to widen the scholastic op portunities of each institution. Mere dith will be able to provide expanded opportunities and diversification for its students without forfeiting its lib- eral-arts atmosphere. N. C. Slate University, largely a technical in stitution, will benefit in being able to take advantage of Meredith’s lib eral arts program, especially in such areas as music and sociology, and for the women students at N. C. State, home economics. The exchange of professorships, calendar and schedule program ming, and further strengthening of the co-operatiye program through joint grants arc other of the mer ger results. Dramatic programs will take a new form at Meredith this semester. Instead of the usual full-length play, Mrs. Ruth Baker Phillips, instruc tor in English and Speech, plans to direct several one-act plays and as sist with some student-planned dra matic programs that will be suitable for the chapel hour. The first play to be cast is the comedy "It Should Happen to a Dog” by Wolf Mankowitz. The play is based on the biblical story of Jonah and the whale. In this short comedy, Jonah is not an unrealis- tically pious prophet but is depicted as a fast-talking salesman whose territory is the eastern Mediter ranean seaboard. The humor and message of the play reside in man’s effort to escape the inescapable presence of God. s Other offerings for the semester will include other one-act plays, per haps a short musical, and some reader’s theatre projects. The read er’s theatre projects should be of particular interest to students who like dramatics but find their time for participation limited.
