Page Four THE TWIG February 20, 1969 /I ^ecidicm ta Mam AROUND CAMPUS GO ASTRO Students at this time of year find themselves frantically involved in Rush Week activities. As President of the Astros, I welcome this op portunity to help straighten out some of the confusion for tlie fresh man and transfers. Students join a society mainly be cause they have to, but after they are initiated, freshmen and trans fers understand why upperclassmen give their all to the respective so cieties. The societies started out as literary organizations, but our focus is much different now. The Astros realize more and more our responsi bility as a service society. We spon sor a project as the Governor Morehead School for the Blind, visiting them throughout the year and helping them to produce an ad- free annual. In response to our interest and affection, they de veloped the Rhythm Kids, a com bo that sings for the Astros during our school year. We have been working on more activities in con nection with the Governor More- head School, but our Society needs the manpower and enthusiasm of freshmen and transfers to help us succeed in our endeavors. The Astrotekton Society receives its initiative both from the Governor Morehead School and from the indi vidual pride that comes from being an Astro. We enjoy seeing others happy. The Astrotekton Society hopes DAN CUPID VISITS (Continued from page 3) cheated by this revelation and may even delude themselves into feeling that their flowers must have been delivered to the wrong person. It’s, after all, a harmless delusion. These, then, are the facts about Dan Cupid’s visit to Meredith. Val entine's Day has gone for another year; candy boxes are almost empty and flowers are drooping badly by now, strewing petals over desks and floors. And already students here (and everywhere) are thinking about next year’s February 14 and hoping —• hoping for that special one-in-900 valentine or those dozen red roses — hoping that next year the statistics will include them. Helen Rich GO PHI Phi is friendship. Have you ever reached out to a child who could not walk alone, and helped him stand, if but for a moment, with his peers? Have you ever seen the happiness in those usually pain- filled eyes, as a fake Santa Claus reads his name on a cheap present? Have you ever seen him cry when he leaves the Christmas Party in a drafty, run-down gym? Phi is be ing a special friend to kids cursed with cerebral palsy! “Service” is the formal word for it — but friendship is the real word. Phi friendship — not just to these kids, but among ourselves, It’s a fellowship which is obvious at regu lar meetings, in the dorms, at Rush. It’s co-operation, enthusiasm, viva city, affection. It’s staying up till three o’clock to decorate halls, get ting up at four to transform the court, and serenading the freshmen at seven. It’s “Come on and sing with me, sing with me, P-H-1 . . .” and it’s Milton. Phi is “Brave Mother, lead the Way.” Phi is a product of much and of many. Phi is friendship.
