Dr. Lemmon Is Hit; Show Draws 342 Some 342 students got more than their quarter’s worth of laughs as “hidden” talent was revealed at the History Department Talent Show Mon., Mar. 24. The motley history crew began the program with their rendition of the Beatle’s number, “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” All found appropriate hands to hold, including Dr. Parramore who pre ferred to hold a red nailed manne quin hand. Dr. Grubbs, with his Wee Willie Winkle candle, arrived on stage to stir hearts with his piano story of the trials and tribulations of a Meredith girl, and her NCSU fiance. Senorlta Gates, with a more seri ous note, revealed her singing talent as she sang “Getting to Know You and “Summertime,” Donned in green fish net hose, flashy mini dress, blond wig and boots Dr. Sarah Lemmon was billed as the star attraction. Her Meredith version of “Harper Valley PTA” nearly brought the house down. The result of this hidden talent drive was the neat sum of $86.50 to aid the five member Meredith delegation to the Model United Na tions Assembly, April 9-14. Hudson Belk a little buys a lot! CROOKING TRADITION (Continued from page 3) filled with Seniors clad in long dresses and high heels, determined to hnd the old stick . . . and the Juniors were there, equally de termined to protect their treasure. The Crook turned up, and in the ensuing struggle it was broken and had to be mended. So it was that this year yet another rule was added. . . . This time to protect the crook as well as the searchers. “The Crook may not be taken by force and no one may be physically in terfered with in searching.” OLD TRADITION “Crooking” is a tradition as old as Meredith itself. The only tradi tion older is that of the two societies, Phis and Astros. The Crook moved from the old campus downtown along with the rest of Meredith. Pictures and stories appear in the annuals from 1906 to 1948, and in many Twigs. Dr. Johnson’s History of Mere dith College contains some brief remarks. Dr. Rose remembers searching for the Crook, and many of your mothers who graduated in the 40’s may also. The Crook now . is being kept by Miss Beatty. SEARCH REVIVED This year, 1969, a 63-year old tradition will be revived. For the third time the Crook will be resur- , i rected, this time as part of Play Day. The Senior officers have agreed to hide it, and the search will soon begin. This is a tradition as silly as Cornhuskin’, as crazy as stunt, as mystical as Alice — and it can be as much fun as all three together if only someone is interested. We think it’s a tradition worth preserv- ' * ing. Time will tell whose colors will tie the Crook this year. The search • is on! PUB ADDITION (Continued from page 1) expanded campus life. Ever since ' the Beehive closed at night, it has been difficult to get snacks after dinner. With the Pub right on cam pus and open until eleven, it will be a great way to relax after study ing.” The Pub will tentatively be open by mid-fall. This has to be April Fool! Sure Sign of Spring ...
