Mrs. Dan K. Moore
Meredith College has a new mem
ber of the Board of Associates. Mrs.
Dan K. Moore, a native of Tennes
see, joined the board recently.
Mrs. Moore is the wife of Justice
Dan K. Moore and a former First
Lady of North Carolina.
She graduated from Western
Carolina University and is a trustee
of that institution, Brevard College
The Acorn
Gives Awards
Donna Armstrong Henderson,
editor of the Acorn, recently an
nounced two awards for contribu
tions to Meredith’s literary magazine.
The awards were made possible by a
grant from the North Carolina Arts
Council to stimulate and improve
creative activity at Meredith.
Jane Cromley was awarded $20
for the story, “We Call It Life.” Su
san Flora also was awarded $20 for
a pen and ink drawing.
The contributions were judged by
Pen & Ink
Poet, Educator Paul Engle...
Kappa Nu Sigma Lecturer
and the North Carolina School of the
Arts.
Mrs. Moore is a member of the
Methodist church where she is ac
tive in the Wesley Foundation, Sun
day School and the choir program.
She is a member of the Board of
Stewards and the Board of Directors
of the Charlotte Methodist Home.
Mrs. Moore is also active in Girl
Scouts, PTA, Daughters of the
American Revolution, Red Cross
and the United Fund.
She is a member of the Woman’s
Club of Raleigh, the North Carolina
Council of World Affairs, the Board
of Directors of the Raleigh Childrens
Theater and the Historical Book
Club of North Carolina.
Justice and Mrs. Moore have two
children and two grandchildren.
Mr. Johnson, a former member of
the Peace English Department, and
Mrs. Olmsted of the Peace Art De
partment. All contributions sub
mitted to the Acorn were judged.
The Acorn is applying for an
other grant from the Arts Council for
next year.
Tuesday, April 7, will be a very
important happening date for four
Meredith Juniors. It will be at this
time that Kappa Nu Sigma an
nounces its junior associate mem
bers.
Making the evening an event for
every Meredith student to really en
joy will be the appearance of Paul
Engle, award-winning poet and edu
cator, in Jones Auditorium at 8:00
p.m.
Founder of the University of
Iowa’s famed Creative Writing Pro
gram, Mr. Engle is now the much-
traveled Director of the Program for
International Writing. Mr. Engle is
the only poet on the National Coun
cil on the Arts and a member of the
Advisory Council for the Kennedy
Cullen Sessoms
In Azalea Court
Senior Cullen Sessoms, 1970 May
Queen, will represent Meredith at
the Azalea Festival in Wilmington,
April 2-4.
Cullen will be a member of the
Queen’s Court during the annual
springtime event in the Port City.
She expects to participate in all the
activities of the festival, including
the parade on Saturday, the corona
tion ball, garden parties, and other
special events.
Representatives of other colleges
will also appear in the Queen’s
Court. Also represented will be
Peace, St. Mary’s, North Carolina
Weslyan, Greensboro College, UNC-
CH, and Wake Forest, among others.
Cullen exclaims, “I’m really ex
cited about going to Wilmington for
the festival. 1 consider it a real privi
lege. In fact, it sorta fulfills a girl
hood dream of mine—to be in the
court.” She adds, “If anyone from
here is going, I’d like them to find
me if they can. I’d love to see a fa
miliar face somewhere.”
She concludes, “Whoever is lucky
enough to be May Queen next year
will probably be asked to appear in
the Festival, as both last year’s May
Queen and myself have been asked
to represent the college.”

A reputation as one of America’s
most distinguished poets has been
awarded to Mr. Engle. He has ap
peared on both American and British
television and radio. His travels and
lectures have taken him not only all
across the United States, but in many
parts of the world.
“Humor, imagination, and in
sight” are termed his outstanding
qualities, and he uses them to speak
Mei'edith Playhouse
Announces Plays
The Meredith Playhouse will pre
sent several plays in April and May.
To be presented on April 13 as an
“April Fool’s Special” will be Noel
Coward’s Fumed Oak. The cast in
cludes Teresa Creagh, Janet Morris
and Debbie Adams, along with Da
vid Drake from NCSU. In a double
feature, Martha Lee will star in the
short play. The Big Black Box, by
Cleve Flaubold.
The next production is scheduled
for May 11. The Sami Box will fea
ture Michael Pittman and Terry
Brooks from State as well as Linda
Goodrich and Brenda Burroughs
from Meredith. Termed an “absurd
drama,” it should prove to be en
tertaining and inspiring.

ATTENTION
Tile Mereditli Pluyiiouse is
working on Its last one-act play
of the semester. Although the Play
Production class is working on
props, any help the students wish
to volunteer will be gladly received.
Kappa Nu Sigma lecturer Paul Engle.
“in praise of life.” Mr. Engle’s lec
ture will be illustrated by readings
from poets old and new and will
show poetry as part of our daily
lives. Entitled “Poetry and People,”
the lecture will present “verse that
speaks in the natural rhythms and
images of America.” It is hoped the
talk “will awaken recognition, feel
ing and laughter as it deals with the
every day experiences common to
us all.”
As a poet, Mr. Engle has written
several books of poetry, one on love
called The Word of Love. In addi
tion he has helped edit two modern
poetry anthologies, Poet's Choice
and Reading Modern Poetry.
Before his appearance at 8 p.m.,
Mr. Engle will be entertained at a
banquet sponsored by Kappa Nu
Sigma at Balentine’s in Cameron
Village. Also honored at this time
will be the new associate members.
Alumnae and the faculty members
of Kappa Nu Sigma will also attend.
An opportunity to meet Paul En
gle will be granted to all students
wishing to attend a reception follow*
ing the lecture.
Presently Kappa Nu Sigma has
membership of the following four
Seniors: Linda Haddock, President;
Paula Tudor Gilbert, Vice-President;
Brooks McGirt, Secretary; and Ayn
Sullivan, Treasurer.
"Gymnasium Nears Completion,
Says Business Manager Baker
“We are really hopeful that the
new gymnasium will be opened early
in May so that the seniors will be
able to at least take a dip in the pool
before graduation,” says Business
Manager Joe Baker. On the east end
of the H-shaped structure is an
olympic-size pool of six lanes,
seventy-five feet in length.
In the center area will be locker
rooms for Meredith students and a
men’s faculty locker room. In addi
tion there will be classroom space,
