Dear Students: As this is the final edition of the TWIG for the 1970-71 academic year and the last opportunity that I will have for saying something through the TWIG, I want to express to you, the readers, my deep appreciation for the warm friendship which the students at Meredith have ex tended to me during the years of my service here. Having been associated with students from one year to four years, depending upon their particular classification, I feel I know the spirit and attitude of those who are Meredith girls. It is one of hospitality, As I leave Meredith later in the summer, I shall do so with a deep appreciation for each of you individually and for all of you collectively, I shall look back on my associa tion with you as a time in my life when I could appreciate fellowship with a host of young people of good will for whom I have much respect and admiration. I hope that it will be my pleasure to see many of you in various places and circumstances in the years ahead and that you will not fail to recall to my mind our associa tion at Meredith. '4/r) Cordially yours, by Suzanne Oakley What does higher education mean? Is it a way to spend four years while waiting to find THE one? Or is it a means to an end, namely acquiring the needed skills for a satisfying career, or helping us find the meaning of our lives, helping us learn to cope with life and the world problems, or building an inner framework in which we will base the rest of our lives? Higher education may be a combination of these factors plus many more, but in the course of pursuing knowledge and education a student needs guid ance. In the Se// Study and Planning Report of Meredith College for Sep tember 1969 there is an excerpt from a report by the Baptist State Convention’s Council on Christian Education. In their view, a “dynamic program in counseling and guidance is an integral part of the total pro cess of Christian education. Essen tial to the existence of individualized services on a given campus the col lege’s responsibility to the student extends beyond the classroom, the laboratory, and library. . . . The aim of counseling and guidance in the Christian college is to help pro vide an inner personal posture and an outer academic atmosphere which is conducive to the search for truth.” With student enrollment on the increase it is only logical that there should be a proportional increase in professional counselors. How ever, this is not the case at Mere dith. In the past few years the num ber of counselors has been cut instead of increased. Is there a need for more counselors on cam pus? Hall proctors have been quick in agreeing that Meredith is under staffed in the area of Student Ser vices. Several hall proctors ques tioned on guidance recalled cases where the girl needed professional help because she had problems the hall proctor could not handle. A senior recalling her days as a hall proctor said, “1 had definite problems like mental cases on my hall. A couple of girls had bad ego problems. I couldn't handle them. They didn’t go to anyone. One left after her freshman year and one quit in the beginning of her first year. I think there needs to be at least three competent advisors.” As it is now, many students go to faculty members with their prob lems. It should not be the responsi bility of the faculty to undertake such a load in addition to their classwork. Faculty advisors are helpful but because of lack of train- E. cruce Heilman row's Still Mistreated; Americans Can Show Concern f Concerned about the inhumane treatment of American Prisoners of War being held in North Vietnam, South Vietnam and Laos? Those 1,570 Americans are sub ject to the violations by the Demo cratic Republic of North Vietnam of the requirements outlined by the 1949 Geneva Convention relative to the treatment of prisoners of war. A few of the violations released by U. S. Ambassador Bruce at a press conference in Paris are the parading of POWs in streets, the forcing of statements, and some torturing. Ar ticle 21 requires that POWs not be held in “close confinement”; but many POWs have been held in soli tary confinement for years. All POWs are underweight and suffer malnutrition although Article 23 re quires that sufficient food in a nor mal diet be provided. These are just a few of the violations of the Geneva Convention to which the Democratic Republic of North Vietnam acceded in 1957. With enrollment reaching 1,200 next year and the tentative counsel ing plan including only an assistant dean and a college minister, the need for more student services is obvious.
