Page Six THE TWIG January 20, 1972 MILTON Phi Letter To Freshmen Dear Freshman, This has been a busy and, probably, confusing week for all of you. You've seen the two societies, the Astrotekton and the Philarctian, at what is perhaps the height of their on-cainpus activities. You’ve been rushed, serenaded, and entertained ardently by upperclassmen, and I’m sure you realize now that, as fresh men, you are pretty special. Rush 'week, as you have probably dis covered, is a strange time, for at no other time of the year is the campus so united and, at the same time, so divided. Your class is perhaps the most able to judge which society each of you wish to join of any class in re cent years. In the past, the fresh man class has not been exposed to the goals and projects of each socie ty until the four whirlwind days be fore Decision Day. The Class of ’74, through the joint society Supper Club, was introduced to the projects of the Phis and Astros. You have al ready had an active part through the Phi Auction for the Cerebral Palsy Center, and, I hope you were able to “reap the rewards’’ of that auc tion. This week, you have seen the other, lighter side of the societies. Tonight you will be the guests of the societies at parties in your honor, and, by tomorrow morning, you will have made your decision and you will take your place as a member of your society. In many ways, you will see that the societies are some what alike, but that there will be certain things about one society which will appeal to you. 1 have only one wish for you — that, regardless of which society you join, you will become an active member. Probably the most im portant part of your total education is the learning to participate and give of yourself for others, for it is only in this way that we may learn who we are and what wc are capable of doing. This is what Phi is all about, as our motto reflects: “For this is the journey that men make: to find themselves.’’ Which way will you go? In what ever society you choose to join, you will find friendship and service that will remain as a very special part of your years at Meredith. We’ll be looking forward to seeing you tomorrow morning and waiting for you to become a part of us. Sincerely, Charlotte Ellis Convocation ■Spring Semester 1971-72 Mon. As president of the Astrotektons, 1 would just like to put the final trimmings on the Astros. The Astrotekton Society is a ser vice organization—that is the main purpose of the society — to do ser vice. Our main project is helping at the Governor Morehead School. Once a week, two or more girls go out to the school and help blind col lege students with their assignments. There are about sixteen girls and boys who attend Broughton High School with hopes of someday at tending college. Their books are not in Braille, so some Astros help out by reading to them. Some of our other service proj ects include a free tutorial service to underprivileged children of Ra leigh, helping with campaigns such "t as the March of Dimes and the Heart Fund, and doing whatever is asked of us. , I just hope that if you can see yourself in one of these situations ' you will “go Astro.” However, if , you feel better helping the Phis with j their service project, “go Phi.” ^ Either way, I hope you are happy | with your choice, and you are willing to help your society to its fullest.
