' ' >’ Weems To Be Inaugurated RALEIGH, N, C,— Mere dith College will inaugurate its sixth president, Dr. John E. Weems, during formal cere monies in Mclver Amphithea ter Friday, September 22, at 11 a.m. The inauguration is open to the public. Dedication ceremonies for Meredith’s first on-campus president’s residence will be held at 2:15 p.m. as part of the inaugural activities. The resi dence is located on north cam pus and will be named in honor of Dr. and Mrs. L. M. Massey of Zebulon. It was provided by restricted gifts from many friends of the college who will be honored during the dedi cation. The dedication is open to the public. Representatives from col leges, universities and learn ed societies and educational and professional organiza tions are expected to attend the inauguration, along with trustees, faculty, staff, stu dents, alumnae, and other friends of Meredith. Dr. Weems, 40, was elect ed president of Meredith in October, 1971 by the college trustees and assumed the presidency on January 1, 1972. He was vice-president for fin ance and administration at Middle Tennessee State Uni versity in Murfreesboro, Tenn. prior to becoming pres ident of Meredith. He is married to the for mer Frankie Gooch of Chapel Hill, Tenn. and they have three children: John Mark, 18; Da vid Van, 12; and Nancy Carol, 10. Dr. Weems holds theB.S., M.A, and D. Ed. degrees from George Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn. Special on campus events are scheduled through the day in conjunction with the inaugu ration. MRS. BAMFORP, DIRECTOR The play will be directed by Mrs. Linda Bamford, speech and drama instructor at Meredith. Choral director is Mrs. Jane Sullivan, voice instructor at Meredith. As sistant director will be sopho more Marlene Hart. Choreo grapher for the musical will be Susan Ervin, and assistant choreographer will be Gail Kluttz. Susan Ervin is a sen ior at Meredith. Gail Kluttz is a sophomore and has had 11 years’ instruction in tap and ballet, and two semesters of modern dance here at Mere dith, She has appeared in pro ductions of “Oklahoma” and “Carmina Burana”. "CAROUSEL" SET IN NEW ENGLANV “Carousel”, set on the New England coast in 1873-1888, is the story of Billy Bigelow, barker for Mrs, Mullin’s Car ousel, and Julie Jordan, a young girl from the local mill whom he marries, Julie’s best friend is Carrie Pipperidge, who is a naive, direct, nor mal girl of the period. Both girls work for Mr. Bascombe, a wealthy townsman. Carrie is in love with Mr. Enoch Snow, a very proper, over bearing type who returns Car rie’s affection. Among the other main characters are Billy’s friend Jigger, who is a n’er - do - well sailor, and Nettie Fowler, a wise, big- hearted woman who runs a spa on the ocean front. The Starkeeper and the Heavenly Friend are two residents of “up there”, who guide and in struct Billy when he awakens outside the “Pearly Gates”, having killed himself follow ing an ill-conceived scheme of Jigger’s, Billy is allowed to look down and view what is taking place on earth. He sees his daughter Louise, now an unhappy teenager, being taunted by her peers. Billy is told he may return to earth for one day , so that he may help his wife and daughter. something he could never do while he lived. FOUR NIGHTS TRYOUTS OF Director Linda Bamford has announced the cast members after four nights of try-outs. Senior voice major Angela Hanchey will play the role of Julie Jordan. Angela is a member of both the Meredith Ensemble and the Meredith Chorale. Junior voice major Lissy Wall has won the role of Carrie Pipperidge, Lissy has appeared in Meredith’s production of "The Sound of Music” and other productions of “Oklahoma” and “The Fid dler On The Roof”, Jackie Hardy, senior voice major, will be seen in the role of Nettie Fowler. Jackie has ap peared in productions of “Dino”, “Carousel”, "Okla homa”, “Finnian’s Rainbow”, and Meredith’s "The Sound of Music”. Freshman Sharon Ellis will play the role of Mrs. Mullin. Sharon has had three years of drama lessons and has appeared in produc tions of “H.M.S. Pinafore”, “Cinderella”, “A Christ mas Carol”, and “St. Joan”. Freshman Ashley Clemmons will appear in the role of Louise. She has belonged to a professional ballet company and has had eight years of ballet and modern dance. ANVY FERRELL IS BILLY BIGELOW Billy Bigelow will be played by Andy Ferrell, Andy is a member of the N. C. State Varsity Men’s Glee Club and has appeared in productions of "Cabaret” and “Irma La Douce”, as well as Mere dith’s “The Sound of Music.” Mr. Enoch Snow will be play ed by Bill Fletcher. Fletcher has appeared in productions of “Carousel”, “The Fantas- ticks”, "Annie Get Your Gun”, “L’il Abner”, “Brig- adoon”, and “Oliver”. He has also sung in college choirs and attended opera workshops. The role of Jigger will be played by Gary Greenburg. He is a member of the N. C, State Varsity Men’s Glee Club, has attended opera fes tivals and appeared in sum mer stock. HARRY VORSETT IS STARKEEPER The role of the Starkeeper will be acted by Mr. Harry Dorsett, a member of the Meredith faculty in education, Mr. Dorsett has appeared in numerous Meredith produc tions and approximately 20 Raleigh Little Theatre pro ductions, the latest ones being “Kiss Me Kate”, “Forum”, and " J.B.”. FEMALE CHORUS The seven female chorus members are Ann Wagoner, Louise Sullivan, Debbie Wal ker, Susan Tew, Pam Faison, Marsha Wilson, and Jeannie Alford, Ann Wagoner is a jun ior voice major and is a mem ber of the Meredith Chorale. Louise Sullivan is a music major, a member of the Meredith Chorale, and has appeared in a production of “My Fair Lady”. Debbie Wal ker is a sophomore voice major. Susan Tew is a junior voice major and has appeared in productions of "Stop The World, I Want to Get Off”, "110 in the Shade”, "Take Me Along”, and Meredith’s “The Sound of Music”. Pam Faison is a junior English major, a member of the Mere dith Renaissance Singers,and appeared in productions of "Plain and Fancy”, and Mere dith’s "The Glass Menag erie”. Marsha Wilson is a junior voice major and ap peared in Meredith’s "The Sound of Music”. Jeannie Al ford is a junior math major, sings in the Meredith Renais sance Singers, and has ap peared in Meredith’s “The Sound of Music” and “The Glass Menagerie”. FEMALE VANCERS Female dancers for the play will be Debbie Hess, Linda Fusco, Beth Gray, Ashley Clemmons, Sherrill Craw ford, Carol Thompson, and Gall Kluttz, Debbie Hess is a sophomore and has had in struction in jazz, ballet, and tap. She has appeared in a production of “Our Town”. Linda Fusco is a freshman and has had eight years of tap and ballet lessons. She has appeared in productions of "Hello, Dolly!”, "Damn Yankees”, and “The King and I”. Beth Gray is a sophomore and has had four years of tap lessons and two years of mod ern jazz lessons. She has al so taken modern dance at Meredith. Sherrill Crawford is a sophomore and has had instruction in tap, ballet, and modern dance. Carol Thomp son is also a sophomore and has had tap and ballet les sons. MALE CHORUS Male chorus members in clude Bob Wrenn, Charles Fussell, Lindsey Dietrich, Jerry Helms, Stuart Pike, Mohammad Mansom, and Ev erett Coates. Wrenn has had one year of voice training and has appeared in "Hello, Dolly!”, "Oklahoma”, and "You’re A Good Man, Char lie Brown”. Fussell is a freshman at N. C. State Uni versity and has sung in "On a Clear Day”, has sung and danced in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Try ing”, and has acted in "His torical Review” and "The Case of the Murderer Who Killed”. Lindsey Dietrich is a sophomore member of the N. C. State Varsity Men’s Glee Club, and has appeared CONCERT SET On September 25, Meredith College hosts the North Car olina Symphony Chamber Players at 8:00 p.m, in Jones Auditorium, beginning the 1972-73 schedule of Cultural Affairs Programs. The cham ber ensemble is made up of ten of the best players from the 65-member North Caro lina Symphony and includes strings, select wind instru ments, and harpsichord, as required by the repetoire. Ar tistic director and conductor for the group is Benjamin Swalin. This year the Chamber Players will be making their fourth run of concert tours, beginning September 22, 1972- May 10, 1973. Since their revival three years ago, the players have received enthus iastic receptions throughout North Carolina, South Caro lina, and Virginia, notably on college campuses. Characterized by informal ity, chamber music has re cently regained much popu larity, Some have said that in no other kind of music is it so difficult to create a mas terpiece, for the various in struments must blend into a perfect whole. State Varsity Men’s Glee Club. Ev erett Coates is a member of the N. C. State Chorus and has appeared in productions of "The Other Side” and "The Sunny Morning”. (Continued on page 2) CAROL SWARR TAKES POST Meredith students welcome back a young alumni to the campus as the Admissions Office welcomes a new mem ber to its staff. Miss Carol Swarr will assume respon sibilities in the area of re cruiting prospective students for Meredith’s next fresh man class. Miss Swarr will help in conducting recruiting efforts during the fall and early win ter months. Her work will in clude extensive travelling a- round North Carolina, as well as occasional visits to parts of Virginia and South Caro lina. Home Economics was Car ol’s major at Meredith. She graduated in 1971 after serv ing as the Chief Student Ad visor. She will live in Ral eigh.
