Sept^mbe.fL 14, 1972 THE TWIG PAGE 3 5 I Designed by Black Students at Meredith — 1972 (Series 7/72) by Renee Lindsey A different type of pamphlet went out this summer from the Meredith Admissions Of fice to high schools. It is sim ilar to the other pamphlets in that it is a pamphlet of a group of people. The unique ness of it all is that it is announcing a black woman’s view of Meredith College, something not done before. Unknown even to our nearest neighbors here in Raleigh is the fact that there are black students at Meredith. This pamphlet, which is to be dis- tributed to high schools throughout North Carolina and several near-by states, will be issued through the Admissions Office yearly. Being black is great, but even more so is being a black woman. We definitely have something to offer. Members of the BVU (Black Voices in Unity) here at Meredith take pride in being who we are and what we are so much that we want to encourage other black women to explore life first through education and second ly through experience. Black has an enormous con notation but for us here it means geauty, Leisure, Aca demic Achievement, Com munity Involvement, and gin- ship. All of these things tie us together as sisters and as friends. If you want to become more aware of who we are and what we want in life, pick up a pamphlet sometime. You may learn that black is more than a shadow to light; it is a wonderful experience initiated through unique in struments named humans. LEISURE Leisure is a time for us to take off our shoes, relax, and be ourselves. Whenever we want to be alone, we study ripples in the lake, bicycle around the campus, write letters, or just think things over. When we are ready for fellowship, we play tennis, help plan a campus activity, or talk for hours with faculty and friends. Leisure is dating and enioving sports events, lectures, and parties in the area. It is also giving time to campus organizations and traditions—participating in Black Voices in LFnity, being a Big Sister, taking part in our class Stunt. Welcome FItGSIIMEN AND I'N'ER (LASS WESTERN LANES COMMUNUy IHVOLVENENT Community involvement is caring. Extending our college experience, we reach beyond the Meredith community to become involved in Raleigh. Participating in voter registration drives, sharing time and self with the mentally ill at Dorothea Dix Hospital, working with programs of local churches — we accept responsibility and leadership roles. Yet we do not forget our home neighborhoods for we return to offer new skills and knowledge.
