Wouembe^ 13, J 972 Ho. 10 TAROUSEl” TO OPEN WEDNESDAY The weeks of preparation for “Carousel” will be culminated Wednesday night, November 15, at 8:00 p. m. in Jones Auditor ium as Billy Bigelow, Julie Jor dan, Carrie Pipperidge, Jigger, and Mr, Bascombe all come a- live in the world of New Fin- gland. Directed by Mrs. Linda Bamford and assisted by Mar lene Hart and Mrs. Jane Sulli van, the play will run November 15, 16, and 17. The music, produced by Rodgers and Ham- merstein, will be supplement ed by a 20-piece orchestra. Stars of the show include Angela Hanchey (Julie Jordan), Lissy Wall (Carrie Pipperidge), Andy Ferrell (Billy Bigelow), and Gary Greensberg (Jigger). Other Meredith students star ring include Jackie Hardy (Net tle Fowler), Sharon Ellis (Mrs. Mullin), and Ashley Clemmons (Louise), The play will include a chorus and dance group. Tickets have been on sale for the past week. They may be purchased from the Business Office (Johnson Hall) from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday-Fri day. Tickets may also be pur chased or reserved from Penny Benson, Room 219 Brewer (832- 9870). The price of admission is $1.00 for students and $2.00 for adults outside of the Mere dith Community. Meredith Receives Freedom Shrine The Cameron Village Ex change Club of Raleigh will pre sent a Freedom Shrine to Mere dith College iticeremonies Fri day, November 17, in the Car lyle Campbell Library. Club President Edgar P, Forehand, Jr. who made the announcement, stated, “The Shrine’s beautiful, permanent exhibits of twenty-eight of A- merica’s most precious histor ical documents are presented as part of our American Citi zenship program.” The Shrine will be on perma nent display in Carlyle Camp bell Library. The public may see the display free of charge while the library is open to Meredith students. Spurgeon Hayder and Bill Page, the club’s Freedom Shrine committee chairmen, participated in the dedication program which will feature Dr. John E. Weems. .Meredith pres ident; Miss Carolyn Carter, Meredith Student Gov(>rnment Association president; and .Mrs. Erika Fairchild, Meredith po litical science instructor, as speakers. “Since it was adopted in 1949 by The National ExchangeClub, more than 4,000 Freedom Shrines have been placed in schools, universities, librar ies, municipal buildings and other prominent locations,” Forehand said. “The documents displayed in the Shrine illustrate more than 300 years of struggle to win and preserve freedom in America. They date from the Mayflower Compact in 1620 to the World War II Instrument of Surrender in the Pacific signed in 1945 aboard the USS AOSSOURI in Tokyo Bay,” Forehand said. He described the documents as “handsomely framed, exact photographic reproductions of the original documents - visual reminders of our hard-won her itage of freedom and of the democratic principles struc turing our republic.” MEREDITH HOSTS SCHOLARS “Was There, Is There, Will There Be: A National Ethic.’” was the theme investigated this weekend by students involved in the National Merit Scholar ship program. Schweitzer, Chemistry professor at the Un iversity of Tennessee at Knox ville. delivered the keynote ad dress Friday evening in 103 Joyner following the dinner ses sion. His topic, “The Three fold Root of American Thought”, was followed up by a conversational panel in a morn ing session Saturday. Panel members included Dr. Schweit zer, Mr. John G. Scott (Wake County Urban Planner), Dr. Frank L. Grubbs (of the Mere dith History Department), and two students -- Betsy Susan Martin and Patricia J. Nathan. Janice Sams, Planning Com mittee Chairman, served as moderator for the discussion. Merit Weekend guests visit ed with Meredith students over night, and student hostesses helped with related activities for the weekend.
