Meredith Gets Grant

major contribution for the NC
FCRC from The S&H Founda
tion, Inc. Wednesday, Novem
ber 1.
Mrs. Mary Edna Branch of
Raleigh, regional consumer re
lations representative for the
Sperry and Hutchinson Co.,pre
sented the grant to Dr. Weems
for the NCFCRC. The gift is
part of a $43,000 grant to the
Independent College Funds of
America from The S&H Foun
dation, Inc. and is shared by
the NCFCRC.
The S&H Foundation is spon
sored by the Sperry and Hut
chinson Company, best known
for its S&H Green Stamps. This
is the 13th consecutive year of
S&H support. The first grant
of $25,000 was presented in
1960.
Twenty-six N.C. colleges, all
members of the NCFCRC, will
share the S&H grant. The col
leges are Meredith, Atlantic
Christian, Belmont Abbey,Bre-
vard, Campbell, Catawba, Cho
wan , Elon, Gardner - Webb,
Greensboro, Guilford, High
Point, Lees - McRae, Lenoir-,
Rhyne, Louisburg, Mars Hill,
Montreat-Anderson, Mt. Olive,
N. C. Wesleyan, Pfeiffer,
Queens, St. Andrews, St.
Mary’s, Salem, Warren Wilson,
and Wingate.
While presenting the check,
Mrs. Branch said, “We are de
lighted to renew and increase
our grant to the ICFA, The or
ganization provides us with a
way to aid many private col
leges which make such an inj-
portant contribution to socie
ty.”
The ICFA Grant is part of
The S&H Foundations’ regular
program of aid to education,
including scholarships, lecture
ships for colleges, matching
gifts to educational institutions
and other grants.
Originator of S&H Green
Stamps in 1896, The Sperry
Hutchinson Company has diver
sified in recent years and now
owns nine other companies,
principally in the interior fur
nishings industry. The best
known is Bigelow-Sanford,Inc.,
carpet manufacturers.
A joint piano recital by a
Meredith College music in
structor and her sister will be
presented at 8 p.m. Monday,
November 27, in Jones Audi
torium on the campus.
The recital by Mrs. Rennie
P. Beyer and her sister, Miss
Anne Peacock, both of Raleigh,
is oper to the public free of
charge.
Both are daughters of Mr. and
Mrs. Lucian A. Peacock of Ral
eigh, were students of Mrs.
Ruth Everett of Raleigh, re
ceived their B. M. degrees from
U N C - Greensboro, and are
members of Phi Kappa Lambda
and Mu Phi Epsilon.
Mrs. Beyer, a member of the
Meredith faculty since 1971, is
a graduate of Broughton High
School and received her M. M,
degree from UNC-Greensboro.
She was a student of Phillip
Morgan and Daniel Ericourt and
a recipient of the Weil Fellow
ship for Graduate Study. She
was a member of the UNC-G
faculty for two years before
joining the Meredith faculty.
Miss Peacock is a graduate
of the N.C. School of the Arts
in Winston - Salem where she
was a student of Howard Albel.
She was a National Merit Schol
ar at UNC-G and was a student
of Daniel Ericourt. Miss Pea
cock had done post - graduate
study with Manuel Carra in Ma
drid, Spain at the Royal Con
servatory.
For her recital, Mrs. Beyer
will perform “Sonata in A Ma
jor, K. 331” by Mozart,“Clair
de Lune” by Debussy, “Jeux d’
Eau” by Ravel and “Polonaise-
Fantalsie, Op. 61” by Chopin.

one day majorette clinic spon
sored by National Majorettes
Clinics on Saturday, November
11.
This special majorette clinic
was attended by junior high and
senior high school majorettes
from North Carolina and Sou
thern Virginia. This profes
sionally conducted clinic fea
tured Susan Lannom, head in
structor for National Majorette
Clinics, a member of National
Majorette Clinics’ staff for
three years and a former ma
jorette at the University ofTen-
nessee, and “Pete” Kerr, also
a head instructor on the Na
tional Majorette Clinics staff
for three years and a former
head majorette at the Univer
sity of Tennessee.
National Majorette Clinics is
open to all members of a ma
jorette corps as well as indi
viduals and aspiring major
ettes. The program offered in
struction in two areas -- Pa
rade Routine and Group Twirl
Routine.
Dr. Reeves
Dr. Marjorie Reeves, Fellow
and Tutor at St. Anne’s Col
lege, Oxford, will speak at Mer
edith on November 27 during
convocation and on November
29 for chapel. This will be a
return visit for Dr. Reeves,who
came to Meredith in 1954 as a
lecturer for a summer ses
sion on Christian Studies. Dr.
Reeves’ main areas of inter
est outside the field of reli
gion, are history and English
literature, which she will com
bine in her addresses on cam
pus.
New Goals
Dr. Gloria H. Blanton of the
Department of Psychology has
accepted an invitation to be a
member of the advisory board
for the Goals for Raleigh pro
ject, being conducted by the
Center for Urban Affairs and
Community Service at North
Carolina State University. Dr.
Austin Conners, director of Co
operating Raleigh Colleges and
a visiting professor in Mere
dith’s Sociology Department
this year, is also a member of
the advisory board. The board
and a group of consultants will
advise a group of graduate stu
dents and professors in the
School of Design at NCSU as
they pursue the study of possi
ble Goals for Raleigh.
UNC Visit
Three members of Mere
dith’s Sociology Department—
Dr. Leslie Syron, Mrs. Helen
Turlington, and Dr. Charles
Tucker -- will be visiting the
University of Chapel Hill on
November 16. In a conference
with Dr. Teicher, Dean of the
School of Social Work there,
they will discuss advanced
placement of students within
this department.
Home Economics Club
The Home Economics Club
is having a Christmas bazaar
Tuesday, November 28. There
will be home-baked goodies and
handmade items to select from.
The bazaar will be the club’s
major fund-raising project for
the year. Posters announcing
the time and place of the ba
zaar will be placed around cam
pus before the 28th.
