PAGE 4 THE TWIG march J, 1973 Maddox appears in Guys and Dolls 44 99 How many girls, packing for a return to Meredith after Christmas, look forward to contributing to one of Ral eigh’s most popular theatres? This prospect certainly did not cross the mind of Carol Ann Maddox, a Meredith sen ior, and yet she is now play ing in the Village Dinner Theatre’s production of “Guys and Dolls’’. The musi cal began two weeks ago and will run for four more weeks, and although Carol must spend six nights a week at the thea tre, she is really enjoying herself. “It keeps me pret ty busy, but it’s really fun’’, she said of her involvement in two contrasting parts - chor us girl and Salvation Army worker! Carol Ann’s situation is en couragement for all to be come involved and go out after things that are of interest to you. Although she had tried out for both musicals at Mere dith in the past two years and met with no success, Carol Ann did not flinch from try ing out for a part in “Fid dler on the Roof’’ at the sug gestion of Mrs . Jane Sulli van of the music department. Mrs. Sullivan remembered her from the try - outs at Meredith and suggested she try for the “last minute cast ing”. And last minute it was: Carol Ann tried out on a Monday night and the show opened on Tuesday! But her efforts were rewarded, for W. C. Hartigan, the director at Village Dinner Theatre, called her up later for the part in “Guys and Dolls”. Even more encouraging to ti mid souls is the fact that Carol Ann had had no musi cal training here, save for one semester of voice which was audited! In “Gjiys” she sings in five songs. Admitting that the dancing was the hardest thing to mas ter, Carol Ann says she en joys it now because it’s so snappy. And what about the professional actors from New York who come to perform at the theatre? Carol Ann’s sup position that they were “wild and wooly” was shot; they turned out to be warm, friend ly human beings. In the su spense proceeding critics night, the old traditions came out: “break a leg” was a common expression and kissing was widespread! Car ol Ann displays a pair of dice given to her by a mem ber of the cast on opening night, for luck. (The play con cerns the gambling nights on Broadway, in part.) Although Carol Ann said she had no plans for future thea tre, her experience will be cherished. More Meredith girls with talent should stick Springs Weekend is coming soon!
