NOVEMBER 1, 1973 NO. 8 Seidw Oass rolls to big victcH*y as class of ’75 lakes second and Frosh settle f€H* third Jubilant senior co-chairman Woody Dicus and Meg Pruette beam while accepting the Great Pum pkin after winning Cornhuskin’ ’73. “Women in History” was their theme, while the Juniors went back to 1953 and the sophs and freshmen portrayed “Meredithbury Tales” and life in Dogpatch, respectively. by Allyn Vogel Seniors Woody Dicus, Meg Pruette and Gloria Smith led their class to a Cor nhuskin’ victory last week. Their presentation of “Women in History” brought such celebrities as Billie Jean King, Cleopatra, Tricia Nixon Cox (Daddy’s Innocent), and Martha Washington. Their interpretation of history from the viewpoint of women participants won the seniors their victory in the parade portion of the Cornhuskin’ competitions. The freshmen focusing on Dogpatch, the setting of L’il Abner, finished second in parade. The sophomores chose to be in tellectual with their presentations based on Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. Their narration by Chaucer (Rosemary Stankwytch) and Dean Burris (Pam Culp) got third place. Ruth Anne Stevenson presented the winning senior tall tale, “Femelia Womenaie”. The juniors placed second and the sophomores third with their tales told by inanimate ob jects. The junior victrola told of Meredith life and music in the 50’s, while the sleezy Wife of Bath’s locket told of her mistress’s date with the “perfect man.. John E. Weems.” The seniors won hog calling by summoning the male chauvinists to Noah’s ark (by twos?). The juniors won second place with their serenade to “Pig Angel”. The sophomores’ pigs got third place with their can-can dance to the accompaniment of “sui, sui”. The big-mouthed juniors bit their way through soggy apples and won the apple bobbing event. The sophomores crunched to a second place and the fresh men a third. The Meredith religion department led the faculty to a win in the Cornhuskin’ event, with Allen Page and Bernie Cochran ripping off the husks in record time. The freshmen placed second and the seniors third after a few disqualification problems with the other two classes. The faculty demonstrated their “meanness” and nastiness and professed that they were showing their real selves in their witch and ghoul costumes. Their song,a repeat from last year was again a crowd-pleaser. Sixtem sevdors receive Hfto’s Who national honors Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges announces the naming of sixteen Meredith seniors to this honor among national college students. Nominations were made by the senior class, the faculty, and the administration here at Meredith with the final ap proval by the Student Life Committee. These sixteen students will be contacted by the Who’s Who organization for biographical information which will be published in the bound copy of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. The sixteen Meredith girls to receive this honor include Genie Lark Bailey, Vivian Anita Craig, Mary Woodley Dicus, Pamela Leigh Faison, Jeanne Parker Guthrie, Marjorie Jane Harris, Eleanor Ellen Hill, Louise Yvonne McCaskill, Amy Lou Pierce, Margaret Ashe Pruette, Donna Susan Rhodes, Gloria Rose Smith, Ruth Anne Stephenson, Susan Elizabeth Tew, Mary Elaine Williams and Alice Christine Winecoff. Genie Bailey Vivian Craig Woody Dicus Pam Faison Nash to speak tor merit Weekend 1 Cookie Guthrie Suzanne Martin, Merit Weekend chairman an nounced this week final plans for the November 9-10 weekend program planned for National Merit Semifinalists and Commended Students from North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The first part of the program will be a dinner session on Friday, November 9 in the President’s Dining Room in Belk Hall. Attending will be the invited guests, the keynote speaker, faculty program participants, members of the planning committee, the Academic Dean, and the Dean of Students. Dr. Arnold S. Nash of the department of religion at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will present the keynote jddress at 8:00 p.m. on November 9 in the Board Room in Johnson Hall. His topic is “The Economy: Master or Servant”. After Dr. Nash’s address, the Merit visitors will join one of four groups to discuss Dr. Nash’s lecture and the program topic. These discussion groups will be led by four members of the Meredith faculty. The leaders will be Douglas Greenwood, part-time instructor in English; Dr. Sally Page, Assistant Professor of English; Dr. Thomas Parramore, Assistant Professor of History; and Eugene Sumner, Instructor in Sociology and Coordinator of the Human Services Program.
