PAGE 2 THE TWIG APRIL 4, 1974 THE MEREOITH TWIG COLLEG-E Secrecy attitude annoying Of all the things at Meredith that I find annoying, nothing irks me more than what I have discerned as the prevailing attitude of portions of the administration, board of trustees, faculty, and even students. The attitude goes something like this: “If at all possible, keep discussion, complaints, and criticisms quiet. Let’s not let anyone think that Meredith College is less than perfect; heaven forbid that anyone should suspect we have any problems.” Having en countered this attitude on just about every level, and having put up with it in silence, I want to comment this week on this particular theme. There is nothing wrong with open criticism or open airing of legitimate complaints. Those who think this is improper or incorrect for Mer^ith are simply reacting defensively. For too long things here have been left unsaid because in dividuals never dared say anything adverse about this school. In the last several years the Twig has made an effort to offer one channel of open communication for the Meredith community. I have heard all the criticism from various parts. We have been accused of purposely arousing emotions, etc. I have even heard from alumnae and trustees who believe that the letters to the editor should be suppressed. As this student newspaper goes through the transition of changing editors, the one thing that I leave for Genie is the urging to ignore those who hold the aforementioned opinion. Bringing things out into the light of day is not wrong; it is healthy. If the Twig can offer a small channel for this purpose, then it should con tinue to do so. E.E. H. Proposed tenure review commended In reference to the faculty member who put the xeroxed copy of a note to President Weems on my desk this week, I have this to say: I have forwarded your note to him in case you did not send him a copy. The note concerned Weems’ March 25 memo to the faculty. Further, I want to say something in support of President Weem’s efforts to review the tenure policy and teacher qualifications. Meredith has some excellent, well-qualified teachers, both with and without tenure. Meredith also has some very mediocre teachers, who cannot communicate their subject. Of these mediocre and poor teachers, there are some who have tenure. There are also teachers on the faculty who, unfortunately, are well-grounded and well- read in their subject but cannot teach effectively. Because all faculties are composed of both good and bad, plus the mediocre, a review of the situation is necessary time to time. President Weems is faced with clearing out some of the dead wood around here, and there is some, without a dbout. Too many faculty members are complacent; they teach the same way year after year, never seeking to revise or improve their presentation or course content. There are some teachers here who believe themselves to be creative teachers, an im pression they derive from the number of times they use audio-visual equipment. These are the ones whose qualifications need to be reviewed. Meredith has some good faculty members and some poor ones, too. If the administration is locking into improvement in this area, then I am all for it. E.E.H. Although I have never been before the Judicial Board a close friend of mine has. Pam is an elected official of the student body and was elected on the assumption that she would serve Meredith students to the best of her ability and would hold her duties in high regard, placing them before her other extra curricular activities. Recently I feel Pam has neglected her job by placing more emphasis on ushering a play than performing her duty. When my friend faced Judicial Board she was told that Pam would phone her with the results of the decision. Obviously any person appearing before Judicial Board would be worried about what decision had been made concerning her case. In the instance I am referring to, the accused waited for one hour after the Judicial Board hearing to receive word. She had learned that the Judicial Board had ended their meeting yet no word was received. Finally, aware that Pam was ushering a play, the accused went to Jones Auditorium to seek out Pam and learn the results of the Judicial Board’s decision. I hope in the future that Pam and other Judicial Board chairmen complete their duties before performing other extra-curricular ac tivities. L. W. Jones Dear Editor, As chairman of the food’s committee, I would like to inform the student body of a channel of communication of which they are perhaps unaware. This year a com mittee of legislative board representatives has worked jointly with Mr. Taylor in an endeavor to implement suggestions from students with regard to ways in which the dining service might be improved.Several additions have been made; i.e.,hotcup lids, sugar substitute, not closing the soup line until the regular lunch line is itself closed. Mr. Taylor is indeed interested in providing us with the best service possible; thus, he relies upon student response in gauging whether changes should be made. If you have suggestions and-or criticisms for improvement, do not hestitate to contact either Mr. Taylor or myself (should you have any com pliments, I am sure he’d welcome those as well).
