Merit Weekend slated; Edmisten to speak Meredith’s fifth annual Merit Weekend for high school students is scheduled for the weekend of November 16-17. National Merit Semifinalists and Commended Students from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia, together with other superior prospective students known by the ad- jnissions office, will be invited to the campus for a discussion of the topic “Beyond Watergate: The Balance of Powers Restored?” Special Thanksgiving service planned • • Dr. John Claypool and Chorus featured Under the chairmanship of Dr. Erika Fairchild, instructor in political science, a planning committee is currently developing the weekend program. The guest speaker will be Mr. Rufus Edmisten, Attorney General-elect. Ed misten was former chief counsel and staff director of the Senate Subcommittee on Separation of Powers and deputy chief counsel of the Senate Select Committee on Presidential Campaign Ac tivities. Following his keynote address, discussion groups will be held under the leadership of Paul Holcomb, Sally Horner, Frank Grubbs, and Charles Tucker. Other members of the MCA- A Wednesday morning worship service on November 20 will be a special Thanksgiving service for the entire Meredith community. Dr. John Claypool, pastor of the Broadway Baptist Church in Ft. Worth, Texas, will lead the worship experience at 10:00 in Jones Auditorium. This service will be the last one before the Thanksgiving holidays, and it will involve special ways for the student body, faculty, and staff of Meredith to join in a time of giving thanks. In addition to Dr. Claypool’s message, music by the Meredith Chorus will be an inspirational highlight of the service. Also, a special offering supporting African Famine Relief will be taken during the service and sent to the relief agency of the Baptist World Alliance. Having Dr. Claypool on campus is indeed an honor. He is a graduate of Mars Hill College, Baylor University and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and was pastor of Crescent Hill Baptist Church in Louisville, Ky., for eleven years before going to Broadway Baptist in 1971. He has published a book, “Tracks of a Fellow Straggler”, and is a popular speaker for college and seminary groups. TWIG newsbriefs Fall forum highlights women The North Carolina Council of Women’s Organizations will hold its annual fall forum at the Royal Villa Hotel in Raleigh on Thursday, Nov. 14. This year the forum will highlight the role of women in the political arena. Specific areas which will be considered are parts women can play as voters, as office holders at all levels of govern ment, as appointees to positions of public service, as volunteers for office, and as effective decision makers. Many prominent women leaders will participate, among them Rep. Martha W. Griffiths (D-Mich.); Anne F.Scott, Associate Professor of History at Duke University; and Elreta M. Alexander, first Negro woman elected judge in the United States. The public is invited to attend the forum which will begin at 9:30 a.m. SOCIAL WORK CLUB Dr. Ellen Black Winston will be the guest speaker at the meeting of the Social Work Club which is scheduled for Wed nesday, November 19. Dr. Winston was recently one of four recipients of the North Carolina Award for accomplishments in public service. She served as Com missioner of Welfare in the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare from 1963-67 after serving North Carolina as Commissioner of Public Welfare for twenty years. From 1940-44 she was Chairman of the Department of Sociology at Meredith. Dr. Winston has had a long and vei^ distinguished career in public service and Meredith is always pleased when she is able to return to the campus for a visit. Everyone is invited to at tend this meeting which will be in the Faculty Lounge in Cate Center at 6:30. IS SELF-DEFENSE The Dean of Students Office offering non-resident students a two-part program concerning self-protection for women. This program is designed to teach how to handle various situations that might be encountered. The program will be presented at 10:00 a.m. on Nov. 18 and Nov. 22 by Lt. Stephenson of the Raleigh Police Department and will include demonstrations, film, filmstrips, and brochures. London semester TUTORS NEEDED Mr. Fred Williams, prin cipal of Millbrook Junior High School, has asked for tutors in math or reading. There are 50 in each class needing help. You will work with one student at a time. A remedial reading teacher will guide you. Help is needed most every period of the day, therefore, you can select your time. Parisian holiday set During the spring break March 8-14, 1975, French students will have the op portunity to spend a week in Paris. This includes all transportation Dr. Galligan will be leading a group of 15 students for the fifth time for travel in France. Students are permitted an option on one hour’s special study credit. Total costs will be $495.00. with first class hotel, private bath and breakfast. Several guided tours of Paris, with one tour including Versailles, also free theater ticket and ad mission to various museums is included in the package. For further information contact Dr. Galligan in the Foreign Language Department. The Meredith Abroad Prc^ram will be conducted in London during the summer of 1975. The exact dates, location, cost and other details will be published later. The courses offered will be: Contemporary British Culture - team taught - Dr. Davis, Coor dinator. . • A Mathematics 943 - History of Mathematics - Dr. Davis. A presentation of the development of mathematical ideas from a chronological viewpoint. Prominent mathematicians will be studied along with their major contributions. An attempt will be made to study the role of England in the development of mathematics. History 944 - The Expansion of the British Empire from the Elizabethan Age to the Death of Victoria: 1600-1901 - Dr. Grubbs and Mrs. Grubbs. A political and economic study of British ex pansion onto the North American continent, into the West Indies and India. Course will consist of readings, study of personalities, British political institutions, and overseas administrations; as well as the problems and solutions sought by the British govern ment in dealing with the world’s greatest modern empire. London tours will be conducted; individual study in London, British speakers will be utilized. „ History 945 - The Emergence of British Culture: From the Roman Occupation through the Renaissance - Dr. Grubbs and Mrs. Grubbs. A study of the origin of British culture based on the development of social and cultural institutions: Latin, Anglo- Saxon; Norman & Renaissance influences will be enaphasized.
