THE TWIG Newspaper of the Students of Meredith College VOL. XLIX^^ MEREDITH COLLEGE, RALEIGH, N. C. FEBRUARY 6, 1975 Elections Board urges candidates to speak by Jackie Cullifer The time has come once again when we look toward a new school year and consider the duties and responsibilities of student government which will fall on new shoulders. Elections should be given serious consideration by the student body for the simple reason that our student leaders are in a position to instigate a constant re- evaluation of present rules and situations. They, along with concerned members of the student body, are the ones who work toward making Meredith a more desirable community, respecting the rights and privileges of each student. In the past, elections have largely been based on who a person was rather than what they stood for. Therefore, the Elections Board is suggesting that .candidates filing for those offices which are con ducive to stating a platform turn such a statement in to the Twig office by a specified date. These statements by the candidates should be sum maries of what the candidates would like to do after taking over a particular office. What Cast set for play Rehearsals begin Monday for Meredith’s spring dramatic production. Director Linda Bamford announced Wednesday the cast for Noel Coward’s comedy Blithe Spirit. The play which she describes as a “classic comedy of the British theatre” will be presented in Jones Auditorium March 25 and 26. Ron Jones who has played in two previous Meredith productions. Spoon River Anthology and Applause, was cast as Charles. The comedy concerns Charles’ relation with his two wives. Sharon Ellis will appear in the title role of the spectral ex-wife Elvira. Sophomore Beth Leavel will play the second wife, the alive and somewhat jealous Ruth. Sharon, a junior, has been in the Meredith plays Carousel and the Effects of Gamma Rays on Man in the Moon Marigolds. Beth was a cast member of Winnie-the- Pooh and Applause as well as choreographer of Applause. Freshman Kim Hewlett will play Madame Arcade, the eccentric medium who recalls Elvira. Patti Dodgen, a freshman and Raymond Dew will play Mrs. and Dr. Bradman, friends of Charles and Elvira. Senior Marlene Hart is designing the set and serving as technical director of the play. Allyn Vogel is assistant director for the production. would she work toward? What would she like to see changed (if anything)? These are merely suggestions. The candidates are free to pursue this however they wish. We strongly encourage taking advantage of this opportunity, though it is not required. This offers the student body a chance to know a little more about the candidates and indicates the interest and openness of the candidates, as well. Th'i Elections Board also encourages the student body to question these candidates ~ find out what they are in terested in, etc. Let’s make - this election meaningful by electing those who want the job and can do a good job fulfilling the responsibilities. Ms. Latham works with the Raleigh Teens in Action and is presently doing a student on the “Prevention of Violence and its’ Causes.” Eva Hamlin Miller, Assistant Professor at North Meredith establishes policy on student access to records by Allyn Vogel Meredith has developed a tentative policy concerning student access to college records. This policy will be re evaluated as needs arise. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 and the Buckley Amendment to that Act require colleges to allow each student to inspect many of her records. Confidential materials which were filed before January 1, 1975 as well as parents confidential financial statements are among those items not accessible to students. Meredith College keeps primary student records in the Registrars Office, the Dean of Students Office and the Career Planning- Placement Offices. In compliance with the Buckley Amendment, Meredith is considering the following policy concerning these student records. A student will be granted access to her records in the Dean of Students office and the Registrar’s office within 45 days of her submission of a request for access. Students are asked to make ap pointments with the ap propriate office if they want to see their records. Recommendations filed in the Placement Office after January 1, 1975 are available on the same request basis. A student has the option of signing a waiver of access to each individual recom mendation. Mrs. Capel of the Career Planning-Placement Office explains that she believes that the knowledge that a student has seen or has had the op portunity to see the con fidential rating sheets might prejudice potential employers against the ratings. They might feel that the professors knowing that the students might read their evaluations would not be entirely accurate in their comments. She plans to talk to recruiters so that she can better guide students in determining whether to sign the waivers or not. The Student Government Association Executive Committee has appointed a three-member sub-committee to study the various im plications of the waivers. For further information on Meredith policy concerning the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act and the Buckley Amendment contact Mrs. Capel in the Career Planning-Placement Center. Caroling A & T, will have an art display in the Cate Center Monday through Friday. On Wednesday, February 12, there will be a “Soul Food Dinner” in the Meredith cafeteria from 4:30; until 6:15.
