K 4 THE TWIG VOL. XLIX NO. Newspaper of the Students of Meredith College MEREDITH COLLEGE, RALEIGH, N.C. Meredith celebrates anniversary with Founders’ Day ceremonies MARCH 6, 1975 Meredith College celebrated its 84th charter year February 25th. The major event of the day was the ten o’clock Founders’ Day Convocation. The key-note address was given by John T. Connor, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Allied Chemical Corporation. Meredith’s senior class of ’75 wore their graduation robes for the first time. The faculty and administration, also enrobed, joined the seniors for the traditional Founders’ Day Processional. President Weems and Shearon Harris, Chairman of the Meredith College Board of Trustees, gave welcoming addresses. Harris presented ex-Chairman of the Board of Trustees C.C. Cameron a gavel. W. Perry Crouch, General Secretary-Treasurer of the Baptist State Convention, delivered the scripture reading and prayer. He ad dressed himself to human relations basing his remarks on the test of Romans XII. Shearon Harris in troduced John Connor who focused his comments on the changing roles of women in business. He noted that more women are entering business but said that full equality for women in the business world will require educational changes. He suggested that though there is a great increase in the number and percentage of women applying for and getting “entry-level” jobs, easy access to these jobs does not mean a similar easy ac cess to higher paying business jobs. He theorized that this is perhaps because too few women choose an educational curriculum that prepares them for management jobs and because of insufficient career guidance for women in the “way business operates’’. Women also, he said, are motivated by their social environment “not to suc ceed’’. He noted that the nation’s 105 women’s colleges offer a “special environment” in which women can overcome the anti-success handicaps and can recognize their “potential for growth”. Society, he said, however “needs an infusion of female leadership” in offices for industries and government. He recognized what he con sidered the unique con tribution of women to society of “guiding society toward self-reahzation.” The Founders’ Day program concluded with the alma mater and a benediction by Dr. Crouch. The Meredith Renaissance Singers and Dr. David Lynch provided the music for the program. The official Founders’ Day activities concluded with the semi-annual trustees dinner to which the faculty was invited. Trustees announce plans for new Jones Hall by Jean Jackson On Friday, February 28, 1975, the Meredith College Board of Trustees held its semi-annual meeting with chairman Shearon Harris presiding. Following the recognition of guests and new members, the Board ratified action taken by the Executive Committee in appointing Dr. Eugene Owens, pastor of Myers Park Baptist Church, to fulfill the unexpired term of Dr. W.W. Leathers. Dr. Leathers has resigned from the Board to accept a pastorate in England. Highlighting the af ternoon’s business was the Board’s decision to accept plans for the construction of a new fine arts building. This two-story building which will pnnect with Jones Hall will include music studios, practice rooms, and a new recital hall. Plans include the moving of Art and Drama into facilities currently used by the Music department. This ex pansion to the East from the present building is considered by F. Carter Williams, ar chitect, to provide the best utilization of space. View of lake, location of organ in Jones, parking space. and cost were all cited as factors in choosing this plan over the previously an nounced building on the west campus. Funds now on hand which may be applied to be used for this building total $600,000. The Board, in a motion made by Mrs. Annie Laurie Pomeranz of Sanford and seconded by Mrs. Margaret Parker of Winston-Salem, voted to raise $100,000 of the remaining $300,000 needed for construction. Accumulation of needed funds and the beginning of work on the building are expected by July, 1975, with occupancy of the building anticipated for July, 1976. Plans are under con sideration to move the Hut across the road onto the hill beside the lake, since the proposed building will necessitate the Hut’s being moved from its present location. Further business of the Board included reports from committee chairman and administrators. Dr. Weems closed the meeting with a statement of satisfaction about the year at Meredith and announced that Dr. Juanita Krepps of Duke University will serve as the Commencement Speaker.
