Silver Shield inducts nine
Nine juniors, including
three associate members,
were elected to the Silver
Sheild Honorary Society
Wednesday night. The
associate members who were
unanimously elected to full
membership were Cathy
Bland, Patti Estes, and Missy
Upchurch. Other new
members are Rebecca Askew,
Louise Crouch, Nancy Pen
tecost, Shearon Roberts,
Patsy Vehorn, and Pam
Watson.
The Silver Shield con
stitution states the standards
by which the society selects its
members:
“Members shall be
chosen on the basis of con
structive leadership,
Christian character, and
service to the school.
By constructive leader
ship is meant not solely
leadership in the sense of
holding office, but also in the
sense of having helped to
direct student opinion into
wholesome channels. The fact
that a girl does not hold office
shall not debar her from
membership, nor shall the
fact that she does hold office
necessarily mean that she
shall become a member.
By Christian character is
meant the actual practice of
the Christian principles of
helpfulness and friendliness
and kindness in everyday
student life, the conscientious
observance of student
government obligations, and
faithful and sincere per
formance of academic duties.
By service to the school is
meant the upbuilding of school
spirit through the contribution
of definite, constructive
helpfulness and initiative in
making Meredith a better
school and through actual
participation in student ac
tivities.”
Nominations for new
members who had at least a
2.3 grade point average were
sent to the faculty by Silver
Shield members. The faculty
selected not more than 75 per
cent of the nominees. The full
members then voted on this
group from the faculty to
select nine new members.
Current Silver Shield
members are Linda
McKinnish Bridges, Mary
Brown, Jackie Cullifer, Sue
Grant, Susan Hamlin, Jane
Hartley, Jean Jackson, Emily
Johnson, Cathy McCaskill,

Martin, Jean “Pogo” Pollock,

Tom Parramore,
professor of history, and Lois
Frazier, chairperson of the
business and economics
department, will be using
their upcoming sabbaticals
for two different kinds of
projects.
Parramore will be writing
a textbook on North Carolina
history designed for junior
high school students. His wife,
another of the current fourth
grade history text, will assist
in the project by writing the
teacher’s manual.
In two years. North
Carolina will be ready to
adopt a new text for the junior
high school level.
Parramore’s book will be
submitted for review at that
time.
Parramore is also
finishing a book to be
published by the Grand Lodge
of the Masons of North
Carolina. It will be entitled
LAUNCHING THE CRAFT:
THE FIRST HALF CEN
TURY OF FREEMASONRY
IN NORTH CAROLINA.
Parramore’s history of
the masons covers the years
from 1754 to 1800. Not a mason
himself, he had to obtain a
special dispensation from the
Grand Master of North
Carolina in order to examine
minutes and other records of
various lodges.
Parramore said the
project was interesting
because it gave him an op
portunity to examine some
historical figures from a
different, more personal
perspective. While the records
are prohibited to nonmasons,
Parramore suspects that
“what I have culled is my
private property. I’m free to
utilize anything I choose.” No
