Library receives grant
by Nancy N. Newton
Meredith College has
received an $8,000 grant from
the W.K. Kelley Foundation
of Battle Credc, Michigan.
The monies will be used over a
two year period for the pur
chase rf library computer-
terminal equipment and to
train library personal to use
the terminal.
The unsolicited grant has
allowed Meredith to join a
regional computerized
library network which is
^fUiat^ with other networks
throu^out the United States
for sharing cataloguing,
acquisitions, series control,
circulation control and
bibliographic information
retrieval.
President Weems in a
recent news release com
mented on the college’s
acquisition of the grant, “At
Meredith, we feel that an
adequate library is the heart
of an educational program,
and this significant support
from the W.K. Kellogg Foun
dation will insure im
provement of our library
services for our students,
faculty, and staff.” As a result
of the grant, Meredith applied
and was accepted for mem
bership with the Southeastern
Library Network (SoUnet), an
affiliate of the Ohio College
Library Center.
According to Mike Dodge,
acting head librarian at
Meredith College, Solinet will
prove to be advantageous not
only to toe library staff but “to
all library patrons.”
The network hook-up will
“open up the amount of in
formation available to the
Meredith library and other
libraries.” Dodge has siad,
“The library staff at Meredith
has long been aware of the
phenomenal success of the
Ohio College Library Center
and has ho]^ Meredith might
eventually join toe regional
affiliate. Through the
generosity of the Kellogg
Foundation, our dream is now
a reality.”
Dr. Russell G. Mawby,
Kellogg Foundation President
was reported as saying, “the
grant to Meredith CoUege is
one of approximately 300
similar grants being made to
small, private liberal arts
colleges throughout toe
United States as part of the
foundation’s continuing
program of support for im
proved college library ser
vices.
In 1962, the Kellogg
Foundation provided a total (tf
$2,500,000 to 250 colleges to
augment their teacher
preparation library holdings.
Three years later the
foundation made grants
totaling $495,000 to 33
historically black colleges for
library improvements, and in
1971 foundation grants
totaling $1,500,000 were made
to 300 small, private liberal
arts colleges for increased
library resources in the en
vironmental area.
The new art grant
program brings the foun
dations support of college
services to a total of nearly
seven million dollars.
Solinet, headquartered in
Atlanta, Georgia, has 125
member libraries in 10 states,
19 of which are in North
Carolina. Member institutions
can provide library resources
for their users from other
regional or national member
institutions.
In a final statement.
Librarian Dodge said that
Meredith College should
receive terminal and
telephone installation and
