THE TWIG VOL. LI NO. 20 MEREDITH COLLEGE. RALEIGH, N.C. APRIL 20, 1977 SGA officers installed by Nancy Newton Officers of the 1977-78 Student Government assumed office at the Student Govern ment Association (SGA) meeting on April 1. Cindy Allen took the oath of office as president of SGA along with Julia Nipper, president of Meredith Christian Association, Emily Widman, president of Meredith Recreation Association, and Cindy Truelove as president of the College Center Association. Phyllis Smith, 1976-77 president, addressed the assembly in regards to her evaluation of the past year’s government and activities. She praised the executive committee as “perhaps the best ever assembled.” Miss Smith hailed the year’s legislation as very profitable, commenting that the discussion and issues in troduced at SGA had been meaningful and worthwhile. Cindy Allen commented on the duties of the SGA president. She cited service as a main concern, seeing and responding to the needs of the community and individual. Generosity in giving of self and time, especially in dif ficult times, was also cited as part of the duties of the SGA president. Finally, ap preciation was introduced as a Teachers honored Two Meredith College faculty members were honored Saturday evening by being named Outstanding Teachers at Meredith. The awards, made possible by support from the Meredith College Parents’ Association, were presented during a banquet in conjunction with Parents’ Weekend activities on the women’s college campus. Miss Beatrice Donley, professor of music, and Mrs. Audrey Allred, assistant professor of education, were selected as teachers who convey a Christian per spective in education and who challenge students in academic areas. They were presented the awards by Meredith President John E. Weems. Two Outstanding Teachers are selected an nually by the academic dean and the president of the college from campus nominations by student leaders. Selection is based on a teacher’s ability to challenge and excite students within his or her discipline, the ability to communicate to students the concept of education in a Christian perspective, and the ability to stimulate students to seek answers to fundamental religious questions. Miss Donley, who joined the Meredith faculty in 1942, received her professional training at the Juilliard School of Music and studied privately with leading voice teachers in New York. She directs the Meredith College Ensemble, a 13-voice singing group on the campus. Mrs. Allred, a native of England, received her un dergraduate degree from Meredith and her masters degree from the University of North Carolina at Cha^l Hill. After serving as principal for several years with the Raleigh City Schools, Mrs. Allred joined Meredith faculty in 1970 as assistant professor of education. Mrs. Allred’s husband, Fred J. Allred, is professor emeritus at North Carolina State University. part of SGA in terms of ap preciating the administration, faculty, and one’s own abilities. In closing, Miss Allen stated that she ap preciated the concern of the administration and students who could make progress possible through combined efforts. In her challenge to the new officers and government. Dr. Sandra Thomas, vice- president of Student Development, charged not only the newly elected officers but also the outgoing officers and student body to always be aware of the needs about them. Dr. Thomas praised both the elected officers and those defeated in the elections for showing concern for the college community. In closing, she asked that all students and administration work together to achieve the fullest potential of the college. Former SGA President Phyllis Smith turns gavel over to Cindy Allen, SGA President for 1977-1978. Young democrats elect by Kim Dale The Meredith Chapter of the Young Democrats Club (YDC) met on Wednesday, March 2 and elected officers for the 1977-78 school year. Debra Bryant was elected YDC president for next year and Vicki Jayne was elected vice-president. Libba Black will serve as secretary and Eloise McCain will fill the offices of treasurer and parlimentarian. French professor. Dr. John Holt will serve as faculty advisor and Dr. Dorothy Preston, who has been serving as Chairman of the Wake County Democratic Women, will also give assistance. “I see a big year for YDC even though it is an off- election year,” commented Miss Bryant. She said that the club has plans for speakers. including some state legislators and possibly Mrs. Betty McCain, current chairman of the North Carolina Democratic Party. The most important project for the Young Democrats on the Meredith campus, according to Miss Bryant, is a membership drive. The club currently has 15 members and has hopes of strongly increasing campus interest and participation. They also plan several fund raising events. Miss Bryant also pointed out that Kim Farlow is representing the YDC at the College Federation Con vention on April 15 in Charlotte. Miss Bryant com plimented a former officer saying, “We are proud that Mary Carol Lewis has served in state-wide capacities in the College Federation and on the executive committee of the state YDC.” IMews News News History society travels^ initiates by Debbie Doss Four members of Phi Omicron, Meredith’s history honor society, recently traveled to UNC-Asheville for the Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference. According to chapter president Layne Baker, three Meredith students presented papers at the conference which involved a morning and an afternoon session. Carol Hedspeth presented her paper, “A Study of One Hundr^ American Women Novelists” and Julie Jones read “An Economic In- trepretation of the True Motives of N.C. Whigs, 1763- 1776.” Both are senior history majors. Phi Alpha Theta has also been active in other ways during the spring semester. On February 22, new members Cindy Allen, Pam Hall, Karen Harrison, Carol Hedspeth, Tonya Jones, Cindy Truelove, Kathy Tyndall, and Miriam Victorian were initiated in a ceremony held in the Alumnae House. Also initiated into the Phi Omicron chapter were Dr. Allen Page, transferring membership from Wake Forest University, Dr. Gail O’Brien, history professor at NCSU, and Dr. Memory Mitchell, editor of the N.C. Historial Review. Dr. O’Brien and Dr. Mitchell are Meredith graduates. Also, Dell Pritchard, a junior, read her paper, “The (^estion of Andrew Jackson’s Birthplace.” The Conference drew students from several N.C. schools, including Western Carolina, UNC-G, Wake Forest, and Appalachian. Guest speaker at the luncheon was Dr. Bell Wiley, civil war historian and professor at Emory University. At the spring banquet on March 22, Phi Omicron members heard Dr. Mary Elizabeth Wheeler, chairman of the History department at NCSU, who spoke on “The Outlook for Women in the History Profession.” Visitation Day Set The 1977 Visitation day for high school juniors will be held on Thursday, April 28, 1977 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Students and parents are in vited to attend to obtain an overview of the academic and student development programs offered on campus. A panel presentation, lunch in the college dining room, and a tour of the campus are scheduled. Pre registration is necessary and will close on April 21. Carolinas Psychology Conference In conjunction with North Carolina State University, Meredith will co-host the 1977 Carolinas Psychology Con ference on April 22 and 23. The two-day conference will convene on the campus of NCSU Friday at 7:30 p.m. and conclude on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The purpose (rf the conference is to foster a better Graduate record exam revised for fall ’77 PRINCETON, NJ - College seniors planning to take the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) Ap titude Test next fall will see some changes in the exam. A new section designed to measure analytical skills will be added to the traditional area that test verbal and quantitative skills. The change, the first since the current form of the Ap titude Test was introduced in the 1940’s, is based on an extensive research effort initiated by the Graduate Record Examinations Board that showed that analytical skills can be distinguished from verbal and quantitative skills and are related to academic success. Students, faculty mem bers, and administrators from all over the country were consulted in the various planning stages of the change in the exam. Educational Testing Service (ETS), which ad ministers the exam for the GRE Board, explains that the additional measure will enable students to demon strate a wider array of academic talents when they apply for admission to graduate schools. imderstanding of psychology through panel discussions, undergraduate research presentations, and films. Peter Ornstein, a nationally known developmental psychologist, will be the keynote speaker. A large selection of films will be shown throughout the conference. Cooperating Raleigh Colleges is assisting with the conference which is open to psychologists and students from all regional colleges and universities. Dr. Lyn Aubrecht is serving as faculty advisor, Vicki Jayne is Meredith’s co-host, Gail Ledbetter is social director, and Dot Hankins is in charge of film presentation. Registration is one dollar and the conference is open to all those interested. Woman Mathematician Dr. Lida Barrett, a well known woman mathematician will be on campus April 25, 1977. At 10:00 a.m.. Dr. Barrett will speak on “Women Mathematicians, Past and Present’’ in Jones Auditorium. There will be a reception for Dr. Barrett at 3:30 p.m. in the Continuing Education Center and at 4:00 p.m. she will speak on “Ap plied Mathematics or Ap plicable Mathematics?” in the Continuing Education Auditorium.
