The Chapel Programming
Committee has some good
news to report. Plans are now
being made for a chapel for
the Meredith campus.
A chapel has long been in
the prospective objectives for
future campus construction.
The “50 year class” (alumnae
from the class of 1928) began a
drive for funds in 1978. Since
the drive began, over $100,000
dollars have been raised for
the chapel by gifts or pledges.
The Chapel Programming
Committee is comprised of
student representatives, as
well as members from the
faculty, administration, and
trustees. The representatives
are as follows: students -
Janice Patty, Beverly Taylor,
and Cathy Clapp; faculty and
administration - Joe Baker,
David Lynch, Phillis
Thompson, Roger Crook, and
Larry Williams; trustees -
Reverend John Stone,
Reverend Luther Brewer, and
Reverend Daniel Deaton. The
Reverend Marion Lark is
chairman of the committee.
Presently, the Chapel
Programming Committee is
studying different functions of
the proposed chapel. Worship
will be its primary use. The
committee is lodcing at the
theology of worship, and
according to Campus Minister
Larry Williams, “we (the
committee members) feel
that what we believe about
God and our faith and worship
should be reflected in the
plans for a chapel. We are
advising the architect in what
we feel is important.”
The committee plans to
visit three other chapels on
area college campuses. So far,
the committee is chiefly
concerned with taking in

Where in the world would
you expect to hear 500-odd sets
of key rings jangling in
almost-perfect rhythm, in the
dark to boot?
Believe it or not, it hap
pened in the Weatherspoon
Gymnasium somewhere
between 8:00 and 10:00 p.m.
on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at the
Tom Chapin Concert. Co
sponsored by the College
Center Association (CCA) and
the Residence Hall Board, the
concert had been publicized
for weeks on the Meredith
campus and elsewhere in
Raleigh. The large crowd in
attendance quickly found
itself part of a unique and
uplifting entertainment ex
perience. Meredith students
found themselves in another
world as they entered the gym
with their friends or dates.
People with or without
blankets sat on the floor
around the makeshift plat
form opposite the bleachers.
Many faces from off campus
added to the unique at
mosphere. Draped across the
wall behind the platform was
a huge banner proclaiming
“We Love You, Tom.” As the
lights went down, enthusiastic
applause greeted Tom Chapin
as he bounded out onto the
platform with his two guitars.
His blue jeans and wide ap
pealing grin immediately
established a personal and
spontaneously warm feeling
among the audience.
Throughout the concert he
gave the audience the op
portunity to sing and provide
rhythmic accompaniment.
His songs captured the moods
of a wi^ range of situations,
such as the despairing crime
of a hot night in Brooklyn, the
anxious encounter between
young lovers, and the sad-
funny adventures of a
legendary bank robber.
The response to Tom
Chapin was positive and
enthusiastic. Lynn Moss,
Assistant Director of Student
Activities, says, “I think the
concert was a tremendous
success. The crowd responded
well... he (Tom Chapin) had a
good rapport with them. His
stage presence was great...
The attitude of the crowd was
good, too. It was a clean
concert.” Miss Moss also
report (Mr.) Chapin’s
response. “He said he enjoyed
it. He would like to come
back.” Says Mimi Santos, a
Meredith sophomore, “It left
me in a really high-spirited
mood.”
Many thanks to the CCA
and Residence Hall Board for
a memorable and entertaining
evening.
