Self-study results given
The accrediting team for
the Southern Association
visited the Meredith campus
March 10-12 as part of a self-
study required of private
colleges every ten years. The
team’s visit culminates two
years of careful evaluation
and study prepared by on-
campus committees of faculty
members, trustees, staff, and
students.
The Southern Association
team, composed of teachers
and administrators from
private southern colleges,
evaluated the college ac
cording to particular stan
dards submitted to the various
committees. The individual
committee prepared reports
which were then submitted to
the Steering Committee,
headed by Dr. Lois Frazier of
the business department. The
Steering Committee collated
the reports into a final report
which the accrediting team
evaluated, along with the
Meredith College Catalogue
and the Handbook.The
visiting committee also
examined personal files on
students and faculty.
Financing of the in
stitutions and Student
Development were two areas
of particular mterest to the
visiting team. They examined
the financial plans recently
proposed by the college, with
the concern that money would
be appropriated for student
programs. Members of the
team talked with students
informally about various
aspects of student life.
At a final session held on
Wednesday, March 12, the
team suggested various
improvements to the
representatives from the
various self-study com
mittees. Among the im
provements suggested,
revision of the health services
was proposed. The team was
also interested in S.G.A.
making an in-depth study of
the present honor system and
its effectiveness. Also, in
tramural programs were
stressed as needing im
provement.
In their oral evaluation,
the team found Merdith
having favorably met all the
guidelines set by the Southern
Association. According to Dr.
Frazier, one member of the
team. Marguerite Chiles from
Furman University, was
particularly complimentary
of the Meredith students.
will be held in the cafeteria
during lunch and supper for
the presidential candidates
only.
Political Emphasis Week
is an event designed to inform
the Meredith community and
dissolve the political apathy
soprevalant in today’s college
students.
Carolyn Grubbs watches as Sandra Thomas (Alice) talks to John
Lindsey (Humpty-Dumpty) upon her arrival in Wonderland. The
February 27 faculty production of ALICE IN WONDERLAND
was a hit with Meredith students.

Hospitality Weekend approaches
by Laura Moore
Hospitality Weekend is to
be held March 22 and 23 this
year. It promises to be a busy
and informative weekend for
approximately 200 visiting
high school seniors. Dean
White, organizer of the event,
feels it is an ideal time for
girls who have been accepted
at Meredith to become
acquainted with the
“academic, spiritual,
recreational, and social
aspects” of the College.
The guests wUl arrive on
campus Saturday morning
and attend a short opening
presentation featurii^ Mrs.
LaRose Spooner, assistant to
the President. Mrs. Spooner
will speak on the value of a
liberal arts education and will
include an explanation of
Meredith’s philosophy of
required courses and their
importance.
A difference in this year’s
plan is the emphasis placed on
the importance of the first two
years at Meredith. The
visitors will be given time to
visit all the departments,
especially those of a
prospective major. Dean
White explains that “we don’t
want to force anyone into
deciding their major before
they’ve had the opportunity to
visit each department.”
An audio-visual display
will be set up at Cate Center at
4:00 p.m. on Saturday. The
recruitng film will be shown
and displays will be set up,
depicting various student
activities.
The Synchronized
Swimmers will perform at
6:30 p.m. in Weatherspoon,
followed by free time for the
guests to use the gym
facilities. All Meredith
students are invited to the film
and display in Cate Center as
well as the swim show.
Saturday night, Meredith
is sponsoring special en
tertainment for guests and
students. Fashoo and Fluffo
from “Clowns of America”
will entertain in Cate Center
at 8:00 p.m. The clowns are
friends of Sophomore Jill
Kibler, who guarantees the
audience will “have lots of fun
and will laugh hard
throughout the whole show.”
On Sunday, a worship
service will be held on campus
at 9:00 a.m. in Jones
Auditorium for guests and
Meredith students.
According to Dean White,
the purpose of Hospitality
Weekend is to help prospec
tive students “finalize their
college decision because it is a
personal commitment they
must be happy with.” She
says the goal of the weekend is
a sort of “mini-orientation,”
giving the guests a chance to
“be and act as they would next
year as college freshmen.”
For Freshman Karen Gordon,
a hostess this year, hospitality
weekend accomplished these
things for her. She comments,
“last year when I came, I felt
accepted, relaxed and very
secure. Everyone was so
friendly and very willing to
point out Meredith’s good and
bad points.”
Several Freshman halls
are planning special events
for their guests. On Second
Stringfield students are
decorating their doors to
represent the different events
at Meredith such as Stunt and
Cornhuskin’. The Freshmen
on Second Vann are planning
a pizza party Saturday night
for their guests.
Dean White comments on
the participation of Merdith
students in the Weekend: “I
am impressed when I see
Meredith students so in
terested and feeling so good
about being here that they are
willing to pass along their
love, loyalty, and excitement
to others. This type of
orientation is the best way to
pass these things along.”
