The Ups and Downs of Meredith SEPTEMBER 10, 1980 THE TWIG PAGES by Cynthia Washington Well, I’m finally here, here at Meredith College. I’m all moved in (believe it or not), and I’m not flunking English or Religion yet. Looking back on it all, Meredith is different from what I thought it would be. For instance, this beautiful campus will fool ya. I’m sure that when you visited here before you didn’t know that you have to walk a quarter of a mile from your room to your mailbox, a quarter of a mile from your room to your class, and a quarter of a mile from P.E. to anywhere, and well, you get the picture. The temperature in North Carolina probably stays pretty much the same all day, unless of course, you’re living on Meredith’s campus. My room must be about 100 degrees above zero; it’s at least 30 degrees below zero in Cate Center, and while I’m dripping with sweat in the freshman dorm, the seniors in Heilman wear sweaters and lie in bed with quilts over them! Little did I know before I got here that I’d give up my life long friend and com panion, my diet, for midnight pizzas and Doritoes, and soda and cookies, and whatever else my roommate happens to be munching on. Yes, Meredith is different from what I thought it would be, but it is still my place for the academic and spiritual growth, the experiences, the friends and fun that will forever affect who I am today. Even in spite of all the little. hassles named up above I’m proud to be a Meredith Angel. NTE Test dates set Students completing teacher preparation programs and advanced degree candidates in specific fields may take the National Teacher Examinations on any of three different test dates in 1980-81. Educational Testing Service, the nonprofit, educational organization that administers this testing program, said Sept. 2 that the tests will be given November 8,1980, February 21,1981, and June 20, 1981, at test centers throughout the United States. Results of the National Teacher Examinations are considered by many large school districts as one of several factors in the selection of new teachers and used by The Acorn seeks student contributions The Acorn, Meredith’s literary magazine, is published two times each year. While keeping a high standard for creative writing, the Acorn also accepts the most outstanding con tributions in art and photography. Be original; we already have Rod McKuen, Helen Steiner Rice, and cheap greeting cards. Create your art from your own ex periences. Give us your best. All creative writing should be typed and include the writer’s name and ad dress. All art will be returned. Place contributions in the drop box on First Joyner by October 10th. The best of these efforts will be recognized in the spring on Awards Day. Studies of acorns and autumn leaves for the autumn edition will be excellent con tributions. Please remember that if your material does not appear in this issue, you may resubmit. Set your standards high. I look forward to working with you this year. Lisa Sorrels Editor. ACORN several states for the credentialling of teachers or licensing of advanced can didates. Some colleges require all seniors preparing to teach to take the examinations. On each full day of testing, registrants may take the Common Examinations, which measure their professional preparation and general educational background, and-or an Area Examination that measures their mastery of the subject they expect to teach. Prospective registrants should contact the school districts in which they seek employment, state agencies in which they seek certification or licensing, their colleges, or the appropriate educational association for advice about which examinations to take and when to take them. The NTE Bulletin of In formation contains a list of test centers and general in formation about the examinations, as well as a registration form. The production was done mostly by non professionals whose only goal was to enjoy themselves while entertaining the public. The majority of fun ding was handled by Cooperating Raleigh Colleges, with a starting amount of $2,500. Godspell was a result of a lot of labor and time for Charlie Krebs, the cast, and those who worked behind the scenes. The overwhelming suc cess of Godspell was described by Charlie Krebs as “a dream come true.” As an ode to Godspell, Debi Taylor, one of the cast, wrote these final words: “Dreams come true are everlasting monuments proclaiming tlM joys of man’s desires—.” CAROUSEL As an exciting academic year begins at Meredith, it triggers the theatrical year on campus also. The director of the toeater department, Mrs. Phyllis Thompson Busby, anticipates a great season beginning with Rogers and Hammerstein’s musical Carousel. The cost is $2.00 for students and $3.50 for the general public. The main goal of the production is to involve as many areas of the Meredith College departments as possible. Students are en couraged to become involved in the show, each individual determining the amount of time she is able to give. Another project of the Drama department is to revamp the curriculum in January by adding classes to enlarge and enhance the Meredith theatrical ex perience.
