Blass:Visiting Fellow
by Linda Sellers
Mr. Walter Blass will be
visiting the Meredith campus
during the week of Nov. 2-7 as
a part of the Woodrow Wilson
Visiting Fellows Trogram.
“We’re very lucky to be
one of the 50 schools in the US
chosen for this program,”
commented Dr. Sarah
Lemmon, Dean of Continuing
Education and campus
coordinator for Woodrow
Wilson Visitors while here.
Mr. Blass will speak at con
vocation, visit classes, and
talk informally with students,
she also explained.
Topics Mr. Blass will
discuss include successful
women in the professions,
business ethics, Afghanistan,
and People’s Republic of
China: 1980.
Walter Blass
shares ideas
by Sonya Ammons
Earlier in the semester
Walter Blass was on campus
to make plans for his
November visit. At that time,
he shared with The 'TWIG
some of his interests and
hopes for his week at
Meredith.
Mr. Blass said that he
wanted to overcome the
reactions of, “Oh
God...another business
man...” and to be able to
“interact with students as a
whole person...” He wanted to
make it clear that he was not
here “to attack or defend” the
Bell System, but rather was
here as a Woodrow Wilson
Fellow.
Mr. Blass comes to
Meredith as one who is in
terested in economics, in.
Afghanistan, in Junigan
psychology. He speaks, ac
cording to his resume, “ex
cellent French, good German,
fair Persian.” Mr. Blass is
interested in the “different
man” needed for the “dif
ferent woman” of today’s
society. He views his visit at
Meredith as, in addition to
being a time to share with
students, an opportunity to
observe a women’s college
and see what such colleges
have to offer.
Mr. Blass described
himself as curious, not afraid
of big words, as one who acts
like a Northerner and talks a
lot. A main goal for his visit is
to have a “dialogue” with
students. Mr. Blass wants
students to feel free to ask
anything or challenge
anything.
“The purpose of the
program is to show that you
take your liberal arts
education with you whatever
you do in life,” said Dr.
Lemmon.
Mr. Blass will also run a
workshop on resume writing
and being interviewed for a
job.
A native of Germany, Mr.
Blass has also lived in
Belgium, France, and
Afghanistan. He received his
B.A. in Economics from
Swathmore College in Swath-
more, Pa., did graduate work
at Princeton and received his
M.A. in International
Economics from Columbia
University.
Mr. Blass has served as a
consultant for Guilford
College, the Exxon Foun
dation, and Newsweek, Inc.
His articles have appeared in
such publications as the Wall
Street Journal, Business
Horizons, and Harvard
Business Review.
Presently the Director of
Corporate Planning for the
New York Telephone Com
pany, Mr. Blass has also
worked as an economist for
AT&T and Country Director
for the American Peace Corps
in Kabul, Afghanistan. He is
listed in Who’s who in Finance
and Industry, Who’s Who in
the World, and American Men
and Women of Science.
Mr. Walter Blass will be on campus Nov. 2-7.
